The Year 276 AH

فَصِرْتُ إِلَى الْمَوْضِعِ، فَإِذَا خَدَمٌ سُودٌ قَدْ عَبَرُوا مِنْ دَارِ ابْنِ طَاهِرٍ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ، وَمَعَهُمْ جِنَازَةٌ، فَصَعِدُوا بِهَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ، فَصَلَّيْتُ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ، وَسَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا: هَذَا صَاعِدُ بْنُ ✧ Mention of the notables who died in the year two hundred and seventy-six Baqī b. Makhlad, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Andalusī Baqī b. Makhlad, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Andalusī. He had a famous journey and a famous quest for knowledge. He heard from Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and other imams, and he has many works, among them his “Musnad.” In it he narrated from one thousand six hundred Companions; indeed, they exceed this number. His shaykhs were notable, for he narrated from two hundred thirty-four men, the majority of whom were famous. He combined knowledge with righteousness and piety. Naṣr b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Malik said: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Aḥmad say: I heard my father say: A woman came to Ibn Makhlad and said: “My son has been taken captive by the Byzantines, and I have no wealth beyond a small house, and I cannot sell it. If you would point me to someone who might ransom him with something, [I would be grateful,] for I have no night or day, no sleep or rest.” He said: “Go away until I look into his affair, if God Almighty wills.” He said: The shaykh lowered his head and moved his lips. He said: We waited for some time, then the woman came with her son, and she began to pray for him and say: “He has returned safe, and he has a story to tell you.” The young man said: “I was in the hands of one of the kings of the Byzantines along with a group of captives. He had a man who made us work every day; we would go out to the desert, then he would bring us back with our shackles on. While we were coming from work after sunset, the shackle fell from my leg and dropped to the ground.” And he described the day and the hour, and it coincided with the time when the woman came and the shaykh prayed. He said: “The one who guarded me came up to me and shouted at me, saying: ‘You broke the shackle.’ I said: ‘No, it just fell from my leg.’ He was bewildered and informed his master. They brought the blacksmith and shackled me again. When I walked a few steps, the shackle fell from my leg again. They were bewildered at my affair, so they summoned their monks, and they said to me: ‘Do you have a mother?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘Her prayer has been answered. God has released you; we cannot shackle you.’ So they sent me back and escorted me to the Muslim territory.” Baqī b. Makhlad died in al-Andalus in this year. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. al-ʿAbbās, Abū al-Faḍl Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. al-ʿAbbās, Abū al-Faḍl. He heard from a group, and Muḥammad b. Makhlad and Aḥmad b. Kāmil al-Qāḍī narrated from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: “Trustworthy, reliable.” He died in al-Baṣrah as a judge in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. Ṣāʿid b. Makhlad Ṣāʿid b. Makhlad. He was one of the officials of the sultan. He was abundant in worship and charity. He would seclude himself to pray and supplicate while his companions thought he was engaged in the sultan’s work. He would not ride out until he had sent forth his charities of dirhams, dinars, clothes, and flour every day. Naṣr al-Ḥājib said: I saw in a dream on the night Ṣāʿid died as if a speaker was saying: “Go to the bank of the Tigris, to such-and-such a place, to a mosque there”—until I recognized the spot—“and remain there until you pray over a man of the people of Paradise.” I went to that place, and there were black servants who had crossed over from the house of Ibn Ṭāhir after the afternoon prayer, carrying a bier. They brought it up to the mosque, and I prayed over the man. I asked about him, and they said: “This is Ṣāʿid b. Makhlad.” ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Dawraqī ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Dawraqī. He heard from ʿAffān and others. Ibn Ṣāʿid, Ibn Makhlad, and al-Maḥāmilī narrated from him. He used to reside in Surra man raʾā, and he came to Baghdad and narrated there. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: “He is trustworthy.” Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās said: It was read to Ibn al-Munādī while I was listening, and he said: “ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm came to us, and we heard from him. Then it was reported that he slipped on the step in the house where he was staying and died, and that was in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year.” ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. Qutaybah, [Abū Muḥammad] al-Kātib al-Marwazī ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. Qutaybah, [Abū Muḥammad] al-Kātib al-Marwazī; it is also said: al-Dīnawarī because he resided in al-Dīnawar for a period. He lived in Baghdad and narrated there from Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh, Abū Ḥātim, and others. He was a learned, trustworthy, devout, and virtuous man. He has famous works, among them: “Gharīb al-Qurʾān,” “Gharīb al-Ḥadīth,” “Mushkil al-Qurʾān,” “Mushkil al-Ḥadīth,” “al-Maʿārif,” “Adab al-Kātib,” “ʿUyūn al-Akhbār,” and others. Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās said: It was read to Ibn al-Munādī while I was listening, and he said: “ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. Qutaybah al-Dīnawarī, the author of works, died suddenly. He cried out with a cry that was heard from afar, then he lost consciousness and died.” Ibn al-Munādī said: Then Abū al-Qāsim Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ayyūb b. Bashīr al-Ṣāʾigh informed me that Ibn Qutaybah ate harīsah and was struck by heat, and he cried out with a loud cry, then he lost consciousness until the time of the noon prayer. Then he stirred for an hour, then he became still, and he continued to utter the shahādah until the time of pre-dawn, then he died. That was on the first night of Rajab in the year two hundred and seventy-six. It has been reported that he died in the year two hundred and seventy, but the former is more correct. Some scholars of transmission mentioned that he died in al-Kūfah and was buried beside the grave of Abū Ḥāzim the judge. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Qilābah al-Raqāshī ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Qilābah al-Raqāshī. He was born in the year one hundred and ninety. He was originally called Abū Muḥammad, but he was given the kunyah Abū Qilābah, and it prevailed over him. He heard from Yazīd b. Hārūn, Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah, and many others. Ibn Ṣāʿid, al-Maḥāmilī, al-Najjād, and Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated from him. He was truthful and one of the people of goodness. He used to pray four hundred rakʿahs every day. It is said that he related sixty thousand hadiths from memory, and in some of them errors occurred. He died in Shawwāl of this year. Muḥammad b. Abī al-ʿAwwām, whose name was Aḥmad b. Yazīd b. Dīnār, Abū Bakr al-Riyāḥī al-Tamīmī Muḥammad b. Abī al-ʿAwwām, whose name was Aḥmad b. Yazīd b. Dīnār, Abū Bakr al-Riyāḥī al-Tamīmī. He heard from Yazīd b. Al-Baghawī and others narrated from him. Abū al-ʿAbbās b. Saʿīd said: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yūsuf b. Khirāsh say: “Abū Bakr b. Junād is just, trustworthy, and reliable.” Ibn Qāniʿ reported that Abū Bakr b. Junād died on the road to Makkah in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year two hundred and seventy-six. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī. He narrated from Yazīd b. Hārūn, Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah, and others. He was lenient in hadith. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: “There is no harm in him.” He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Among the notable people who died in this year were: Aḥmad b. Ḥāzim b. Abī Gharzah Aḥmad b. Ḥāzim b. Abī Gharzah, the ḥāfiẓ, author of the famous “Musnad.” He had many hadiths and elevated chains. And Baqī b. Makhlad. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Andalusī, the great ḥāfiẓ, author of the “Musnad” arranged according to fiqh. In it he narrated from one thousand six hundred Companions. Ibn Ḥazm preferred it over the “Musnad” of Imam Aḥmad. In my view, there is some consideration in that. The apparent matter is that the “Musnad” of Aḥmad is better than it, for it is not in their lands, and its transmission did not reach them. Had he examined it and become aware of what is in it, he would not have preferred any musnad over it. O God, unless Baqī had heard all of the “Musnad” from Aḥmad and added to it, as God has facilitated additions that we have appended to the “Musnad” of Imam Aḥmad. To God belongs praise and grace. Baqī traveled to Iraq and heard from Imam Aḥmad and other imams of hadith in Iraq and elsewhere; they exceeded two hundred by eighty-four shaykhs. He has other works as well. Along with that, he was a righteous, devout, ascetic man whose supplication was answered. Al-Qushayrī mentioned that a woman came to him and said: “My son has been taken captive by the Franks, and I cannot sleep at night out of longing for him. I have a small house that I want to sell to ransom him. If you see fit to go to someone who might take it so that I can work for his release, [do so,] for I have no night or day, no patience or rest.” He said: “Yes, go away until we look into that, if God wills.” The shaykh lowered his head and moved his lips, supplicating to God, Mighty and Majestic, for the release of her son. The woman left, and it was only a short while before she came back with her son. She said: “Listen to his story, may God have mercy on you.” He said: “How was your affair?” He said: “I was among those who served the king, and we were in shackles. One day while I was walking, the shackle fell from my leg. The one in charge of us came up and reviled me, saying: ‘You unfastened the shackle from your legs?’ I said: ‘No, by God, it just fell without my noticing.’ They brought the blacksmith, and he put it back and tightened its nail and reinforced it. Then I stood up and it fell again. They put it back and secured it, and it fell again. They asked their monks, and they said: ‘Does he have a mother?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘Her prayer has been answered. Release him.’ So they released me and escorted me until I reached the lands of Islam.” Baqī b. Makhlad asked him about the hour when the shackle fell from his legs, and it was the very hour when he had supplicated to God for him. And Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Ṣāʾigh, and Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, Abū al-Raddād the muezzin And Abū al-Raddād the muezzin, who is ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Salām b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Raddād, the muezzin in charge of the miqyās in Miṣr, which has been entrusted to him and his descendants until this day of ours. This was said by al-Qāḍī Ibn Khallikān in “al-Wafayāt.” In this year died Abū Saʿīd al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Yashkurī, the grammarian and transmitter. He was born in the year two hundred and twelve. In this year died Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, Abū Jaʿfar al-Qaṣṣāb, the Sufi. He was among the peers of al-Sarī, and al-Junayd kept his company often.
