Translation

✧ The war between al-Ṭāʾī and Fāris al-ʿAbdī In the year 275 AH, Fāris al-ʿAbdī appeared with a group, made the roads unsafe, marched to the houses of Sāmarrā, and plundered. Al-Ṭāʾī marched against him in battle, defeated him, and seized his baggage. Then al-Ṭāʾī went to the Tigris to cross it, and entered a boat of his. Some of Fāris's companions caught up with him and clung to the stern of the boat. Al-Ṭāʾī threw himself into the water and swam. When he came out of it, he shook his beard and said: "What does al-ʿAbdī think? Am I not a better swimmer than a fish?" Then al-Ṭāʾī encamped at al-Sinn and al-ʿAbdī opposite him. ʿAlī b. Bassām said about al-Ṭāʾī: Al-Ṭāʾī has come forward—what a coming! He opens in deeds what is most beautiful. It is as though, from the softness of his words, he is a young girl chewing jahd al-balā. Jahd al-balā is a kind of nāfiṭ that is chewed. In this year al-Muwaffaq seized al-Ṭāʾī, put him in fetters, and sealed all his property. He had governed al-Kūfah and its rural districts, the road to Khurāsān, Sāmarrā, the shurṭah in Baghdādh, and the land tax of Bādūriyā, Quṭrubbul, and Maskin.
