✧ The war between Ibn Kundāj and Ibn Abī al-Sāj When Kundāj was defeated by Ibn Abī al-Sāj, as we have mentioned, he remained until Ibn Abī al-Sāj was defeated by Khumārawayh. When Khumārawayh arrived at the town, he stayed there, and sent with Isḥāq b. Kundāj a large army and a group of commanders, and he set out seeking Ibn Abī al-Sāj. He went before him while Ibn Kundāj followed him to Tikrīt. Ibn Abī al-Sāj crossed the Tigris, and Ibn Kundāj stayed and gathered boats to make a bridge to cross over, and there was shooting between the two parties. Ibn Abī al-Sāj had about two thousand horsemen, and Ibn Kundāj had twenty thousand. When Abū al-Sāj saw the gathering of boats, he marched from Tikrīt to al-Mawṣil by night, and reached it on the fourth day. He camped outside it near the Upper Monastery, and Ibn Kundāj marched in pursuit, reaching al-ʿAzīq. When Ibn Abī al-Sāj heard news of him, he marched toward him, and they met and fought at Qaṣr Ḥarb. The fighting between them intensified, and Muḥammad b. Abī al-Sāj showed great steadfastness, because he was few in number. God granted him victory, and Ibn Kundāj and all his army were defeated, and he fled in rout. The greatest reason for his defeat was his arrogance. For when it was said to him, "Ibn Abī al-Sāj has come toward you from al-Mawṣil to fight you," he said, "I shall meet the dog!" People counted this as arrogance and feared him because of it. When he was defeated and marched to al-Raqqah, Muḥammad followed him there, and wrote to Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq informing him of what had happened, and asking his permission to cross the Euphrates into Syria, the lands of Khumārawayh. Al-Muwaffaq wrote back thanking him and ordering him to halt until reinforcements reached him from his side. As for Ibn Kundāj, he marched to Khumārawayh, who sent an army with him, and they reached the Euphrates. Isḥāq b. Kundāj was in Syria, and Ibn Abī al-Sāj was at al-Raqqah, and he appointed someone at the Euphrates to prevent crossing, and they remained thus for a time. Then Ibn Kundāj sent a detachment of his army, and they crossed the Euphrates at a different place and marched. A detachment of Ibn Abī al-Sāj's army, who were a vanguard, did not realize until they had fallen upon them, and they fled from Isḥāq's army to al-Raqqah. When Ibn Abī al-Sāj saw that, he marched from al-Raqqah to al-Mawṣil. When he reached it, he sought assistance from its people with money, and said to them, "There is no honor for one in dire straits." He stayed there about a month, then went down to Baghdādh and joined Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year two hundred seventy-six, and al-Muwaffaq took him along to the mountain, bestowed a robe of honor upon him, and gave him money. Ibn Kundāj remained in Diyār Rabīʿah and Diyār Muḍar in the land of al-Jazīrah.
