✧ The dispute between Khumārawayh and Ibn Abī al-Sāj We have previously mentioned the agreement between Ibn Abī al-Sāj and Khumārawayh b. Ṭūlūn, and Ibn Abī al-Sāj's obedience to him. But now Ibn Abī al-Sāj opposed Khumārawayh. When Khumārawayh heard the news, he marched from Egypt with his armies toward Syria. He arrived there at the end of the year two hundred and seventy-four. Ibn Abī al-Sāj marched toward him, and they met at Thaniyyat al-ʿUqāb near Damascus. They fought in Muḥarram of this year. The battle took place between them, and Khumārawayh's right wing was routed. The rest of his army surrounded Ibn Abī al-Sāj and those with him, and he fled defeated. His camp was plundered, and the baggage, mounts, and everything in it were taken. He had left a great deal at Ḥimṣ, so Khumārawayh sent a commander with a detachment of light cavalry, and they reached it before Ibn Abī al-Sāj, preventing him from entering it and taking refuge there. They seized what he had in it. Ibn Abī al-Sāj fled defeated to Aleppo, then from there to al-Raqqah. Khumārawayh pursued him, so he left al-Raqqah. Khumārawayh crossed the Euphrates and marched in pursuit of Ibn Abī al-Sāj, reaching the city of Balad. Ibn Abī al-Sāj had preceded him to al-Mawṣil. When Ibn Abī al-Sāj heard of his arrival at Balad, he marched from al-Mawṣil to al-Ḥadīthah. Khumārawayh stayed at Balad and had a couch made for himself with long legs, on which he would sit in the Euphrates. At that point Isḥāq b. Kundāj became greedy, so he marched behind him, hoping to capture something from him, but he could not. They met one day, and Ibn Abī al-Sāj held out against him with great steadfastness, so he was safe and went to Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq in Baghdad. He honored him, bestowed robes of honor upon him, and took him along with him to the mountain. Isḥāq b. Kundāj returned to Diyār Bakr and Muḍar in the Jazīrah.
