Translation

✧ An engagement between the army of Ibn Abī al-Sāj and the Kharijites When Ibn Abī al-Sāj took control of al-Mawṣil, he sent a detachment of his army with his ghulām Fatḥ, who was a brave commander in his service, to al-Marj in the districts of al-Mawṣil. They marched there and collected the land tax from it. The Yaʿqūbiyyah Kharijites were nearby, so he sent to them and made a truce with them, saying: "My stay at al-Marj is only for a short while, then I shall depart from it." So they trusted his word and dispersed. Some of them encamped near Sūq al-Aḥad. Fatḥ launched a night raid against them at dawn, fell upon them, seized their property, and the men fled from him. The rest of the Yaʿqūbiyyah had gone out to their companions whom Fatḥ had attacked without knowing of the event. The fugitives from among their companions met them, and they gathered together and returned to fight Fatḥ. They charged as one man, routed him, and killed eight hundred of his men. His force had been a thousand men, so he escaped with about a hundred, while another hundred scattered into the villages and hid. They returned to al-Mawṣil in scattered groups and stayed there.
