✧ The disagreement between Ibn Abī al-Sāj and Ibn Kundāj, and the khuṭbah in al-Jazīrah for Ibn Ṭūlūn In the year two hundred and seventy-three, the situation deteriorated between Muḥammad b. Abī al-Sāj and Isḥāq b. Kundāj, who had been in agreement in al-Jazīrah. The reason for that was that Abū al-Sāj (fell out with Isḥāq over the governances, and desired precedence, but Isḥāq refused him, so Ibn Abī al-Sāj sent to) Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, the ruler of Egypt, (and obeyed him, and joined him) and made the khuṭbah for him in his governances, which were Qinnasrīn, and sent his son Dīwdād to Khumārawayh as a hostage, so Khumārawayh sent him abundant wealth for him and his commanders. Khumārawayh marched to al-Shām, and he and Ibn Abī al-Sāj met at Bālis, and Ibn Abī al-Sāj crossed the Euphrates to al-Raqqah, where Ibn Kundāj met him, and a battle took place between them in which Ibn Kundāj was defeated, and Ibn Abī al-Sāj seized what belonged to Ibn Kundāj, and Khumārawayh crossed the Euphrates and encamped at al-Rāfiqah, and Isḥāq fled in defeat to the fortress of Mārdīn, (so Ibn Abī al-Sāj besieged him, and then moved from there to Sinjār, where he fell upon a group of Bedouins, and Ibn Kundāj marched from Mārdīn) toward al-Mawṣil, and Ibn Abī al-Sāj met him at Barqaʿīd, and he laid an ambush, so they came out against Ibn Kundāj at the time of battle, and he was defeated from it, and returned to Mārdīn and remained there; and Ibn Abī al-Sāj grew strong, and his affair became manifest, and he seized control of al-Jazīrah and al-Mawṣil, and made the khuṭbah for Khumārawayh in them, then for himself after him.
