✧ Those among the notables who died in the year 271 AH Būrān bt. al-Ḥasan b. Sahl Būrān bt. al-Ḥasan b. Sahl. The wife of al-Maʾmūn. It is said that her name was Khadījah, and Būrān was a nickname for her. The correct view is the former. Al-Maʾmūn concluded the marriage contract with her at Fam al-Ṣilḥ in the year 202 AH, when she was ten years old. On that day her father scattered among the people balls of musk, with a piece of paper inside each ball on which was written the name of a village, or an estate, or a slave girl, or a slave boy, or a horse; whoever picked up any of that became its owner. He also scattered dinars, musk pods, and pieces of ambergris among the common people, and he spent on al-Maʾmūn and his army during the days of his stay there fifty million dirhams. When al-Maʾmūn departed from him, he gave him ten million dirhams, and he granted him Fam al-Ṣilḥ as a fief. He consummated the marriage with her in the year 210 AH. When al-Maʾmūn sat down, they spread for him a mat of gold and scattered at his feet a thousand pearls. There was also a basin of gold containing a candle of ambergris weighing forty manns of ambergris. He said: "This is extravagance." He looked at those pearls on the mat and said: "May God curse Abū Nuwās for what he said in describing wine: As if the small and large of its drops Are pebbles of pearl on a ground of gold Then he ordered the pearls to be gathered and placed them in her lap, and said: "This is a gift from me to you; ask for your need." Her grandmother said to her: "Ask your master, for he has made you speak." She said: "I ask the Commander of the Faithful to be pleased with Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī." So he was pleased with him. Then he wanted to be alone with her, but she was menstruating, and that was in the month of Ramaḍān. Then al-Maʾmūn died in the year 218 AH, and she remained after him until her death in this year, at the age of eighty. Ḥamdūn b. [Aḥmad b.] ʿUmārah, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Qaṣṣār Ḥamdūn b.
