Translation

✧ Mention of several events, and the Pilgrimage with the people in the year two hundred and seventy-one was led by Hārūn b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-ʿAbbāsī. On the tenth of Ramaḍān in this year, Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Ṭāʾī was invested with authority over al-Madīnah and the road to Makkah. Then Yūsuf b. Abī al-Sāj—who was governor of Makkah—fell upon Badr, the servant of al-Ṭāʾī, who was commander of the pilgrims, fought him, and captured him. The troops rose against Yūsuf, fought him, rescued Badr, took Yūsuf prisoner, and carried him to Baghdādh. The fighting between them took place at the gates of the Sacred Mosque. Abū Bakr al-Ādamī said: When Muʾnis brought Abū al-Qāsim b. Abī al-Sāj in as a prisoner, I went out to meet him at a distance of several parasangs and entered Baghdād with him. When we drew near, he said to me: “Tomorrow I shall mount Ibn Abī al-Sāj and parade him in disgrace, so ride before him and recite.” I said: “To hear is to obey.” The next day Ibn Abī al-Sāj was paraded wearing a burnoose. I began and recited: “And thus is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are wrongdoing; indeed His seizing is painful and severe,” and I followed it with everything in the Qurʾān of this kind. He said: I happened to glance around and saw Ibn Abī al-Sāj weeping. That day passed. Some days later, the ruler was pleased with him through the intercession of Muʾnis and released him to his house. One day I was in the presence of Muʾnis reciting when he summoned me and said: “Ibn Abī al-Sāj has asked for you today, so go to him.” I said to him: “My master, God, God, for my sake! Perhaps he felt resentment at my recitation that day.” He laughed and said: “Go to him.” So I went to him. He raised me up, seated me, and said: “I would like you to recite those verses you recited before me on such-and-such a day.” I said: “My lord, that was a situation that called for it, and one like you should not hold one like me to account for it. God has now removed it. But I shall recite something else for you.” He said: “No, only those. A humility and fear entered me because of them, and I would like to break my soul with them, so repeat their recitation to me.” He said: I began and recited them to him, and he kept weeping and sobbing until I finished the recitation. Then he said: “Come forward to me.” He said: By God, I feared that he would seize me. Then I said to myself: This is impossible. So I came forward. He brought out from beneath his prayer mat many dinars and said: “Open your mouth.” I opened it as wide as I could, and he kept filling it until no space remained in my mouth. Then he said to a servant: “Bring it.” The servant came with a purse containing two thousand dirhams and placed it in my sleeve. Then I went out and was brought a fine saddled mule, and I was mounted on it. He also gave me clothing as a gift and said: “Whenever you wish, return to us, and do not cut yourself off from us as long as we remain here.” I would come to him every week and recite in his house, and he would give me one hundred dinars every month, until he left the City of Peace. In this year: the common people rose against the Christians and destroyed the ancient monastery beyond Nahr ʿĪsā, plundered everything in it by way of goods, tore out the doors and wood, demolished some of its walls and roofs, and dug up the dead. Al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl, the chief of police of Baghdād on behalf of Muḥammad b. Ṭāhir, went out to them and prevented them from demolishing what remained of it. He kept going back there for days while the common people gathered in those days until fighting nearly broke out among them. Then he rebuilt what the common people had demolished, and its rebuilding, as it is said, was due to the influence of ʿAbdūn b. Makhlad the Christian, brother of Ṣāʿid b. Makhlad. In Dhū al-Qaʿdah: al-Muʿtamid came to Baghdād and led the people in the prayer of the Sacrifice at the place of prayer, and the people saw him wearing the burdah. That was on Saturday. In the year two hundred and seventy-one, al-Ṣūlī said: “Hārūn b. Ibrāhīm al-Hāshimī was placed in charge of the market inspection. He ordered the people of Baghdād to use copper fulūs for transactions, so they used them reluctantly, then abandoned them.”
