✧ The Battle of the Mills In the year two hundred and seventy-one, there was a battle between Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Muʿtaḍid b. al-Muwaffaq Abī Aḥmad and Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn; the reason for that was that al-Muʿtaḍid marched from Damascus, after he had taken it, toward al-Ramlah against the armies of Khumārawayh. Then news came to him that Khumārawayh had reached his armies and that the crowds with him were numerous. He resolved to turn back, but those with him of Khumārawayh's followers who had joined him would not let him. Al-Muʿtaḍid had estranged Ibn Kundājīq and Ibn Abī al-Sāj and accused them of cowardice because they had waited for him to arrive there, so their intentions toward him were corrupted. When Khumārawayh reached al-Ramlah, he encamped at the water where the mills were and took possession of it, so the battle was named after it. Al-Muʿtaḍid arrived having drawn up his men in battle order, and Khumārawayh likewise did the same. He set for them an ambush under Saʿīd al-Aysar. The left wing of al-Muʿtaḍid charged the right wing of Khumārawayh, and it was routed. When Khumārawayh saw that, and he had not seen a pitched battle before, he fled in rout with a few of the young men who had no knowledge of war, and he did not stop until he reached Miṣr. Al-Muʿtaḍid dismounted at Khumārawayh's tents, not doubting that victory was complete. Then those whom Saʿīd al-Aysar commanded came out, and those who remained of Khumārawayh's army joined him. They called out their battle cry and charged al-Muʿtaḍid's camp while they were busy plundering the camp followers. The Egyptians put the sword to them. Al-Muʿtaḍid thought that Khumārawayh had returned, so he mounted and fled without turning to anything, until he reached Damascus. Its people did not open its gate for him, and he went on in flight until he reached Ṭarsūs. The two armies remained striking one another with swords, and neither of them had a commander. Saʿīd al-Aysar sought Khumārawayh but did not find him, so he installed his brother Abū al-ʿAshāʾir. The rout of the Iraqis was completed, and a great many of them were killed and many taken captive. Saʿīd said to the troops: "This is the brother of your master, and these funds will be spent among you." He distributed the pay, and the soldiers were distracted from mutiny by the money. The good tidings were sent to Miṣr, and Khumārawayh rejoiced at the victory and was ashamed of the rout, except that he gave much in charity and did with the captives a thing such as no one before him had done. He said to his companions: "These are your guests, so honor them." Then he summoned them afterward and said to them: "Whoever chooses to remain with me will have honor and support, and whoever wishes to return we shall equip and send off." Some of them stayed and some departed with honor. Khumārawayh's army returned to Syria and conquered all of it, and Khumārawayh's kingship became firmly established for him.
