✧ The March of Isḥāq b. Kundājīq to Syria When Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn died, Isḥāq b. Kundājīq was over Mosul and the Jazīra, so he and Ibn Abī al-Sāj coveted Syria, regarded the sons of Aḥmad as too young, corresponded with al-Muwaffaq bi-Allāh about that, and sought his reinforcement. He ordered the two of them to make for the lands and promised them the dispatch of armies. So they gathered and made for the lands adjoining them, took them over, and the deputy in Damascus for Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn assisted them and promised to defect to them. Then Aḥmad's deputies in Syria withdrew to Antioch, Aleppo, and Homs, and the governor of Damascus rebelled, so Isḥāq seized that. The news reached Abū al-Jaysh Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad, so he sent armies to Syria, and they took Damascus. The deputy who had been there fled, and Khumārawayh's army marched from Damascus to Shayzar to fight Isḥāq b. Kundājīq and Ibn Abī al-Sāj. Isḥāq protracted matters with them, awaiting reinforcements from Iraq, and winter descended upon the two parties, harming Ibn Ṭūlūn's men, so they dispersed into the dwellings at Shayzar. The Iraqi army reached Kundājīq, and over them was Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. al-Muwaffaq, who is al-Muʿtaḍid bi-Allāh. When he arrived, he marched swiftly to Khumārawayh's army at Shayzar, and they were unaware until he fell upon them in their abodes, put the sword to them, and killed a great slaughter among them. Those who survived went to Damascus in the most wretched state, and al-Muʿtaḍid marched against them, so they withdrew from Damascus to al-Ramla, and he took Damascus and entered it in Shaʿbān of the year 271 AH. Ibn Ṭūlūn's army stayed at al-Ramla, and they sent to Khumārawayh informing him of the situation, so he set out from Egypt with his armies heading to Syria.
