Translation

✧ The burning of the bridge of the ʿAlawī, the leader of the Zanj When al-Muwaffaq was occupied with his illness, the vile one rebuilt the bridge at which Nuṣayr had drowned, and added to it and made it strong. He set before it masts of teak and clad them with iron, and he closed off before that a dam of stones to narrow the entrance for the shadhā boats, and so that the current of the water in the canal would become strong. Al-Muwaffaq summoned his companions, and sent a party from the east side of the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb and a party from its west side, and sent with them carpenters and laborers to cut the bridge and what was set before it. He ordered ships filled with reeds to have naphtha poured over them, to enter the canal, and for fire to be thrown into them so that the bridge would burn. He dispersed his troops against the vile ones to prevent them from aiding those at the bridge. The people marched to what he had commanded them on the tenth of Shawwāl. The two parties advanced to the bridge, and Ankalāy the son of the vile one met them, along with ʿAlī b. Abān and Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ. The battle became entangled and lasted, and those ones defended the bridge because they knew the harm to them in its cutting, and that reaching the two great bridges whose mention will come would become easy. The battle over the bridge lasted until the afternoon. Then the servants of al-Muwaffaq removed the vile ones from it, and the carpenters cut it and demolished it, along with what had been made of teak masts. Its cutting had been difficult for them, so they brought in those ships containing reeds and naphtha, and set them ablaze. They reached the bridge and burned it, and by that the carpenters achieved what they wanted. The companions of the shadhā boats were able to enter the canal, so they entered and killed the Zanj until they drove them from their positions to the first bridge that follows this bridge. Many of the Zanj were killed, and many sought amnesty. The companions of al-Muwaffaq reached the western bridge, but he disliked that night should overtake them, so he ordered them to return, and they returned. He wrote to the provinces that it should be read from the pulpits that the doer of good would be rewarded according to his good deed, so that they would increase in earnestness in the war against his enemy. The next day he destroyed two towers of stone that they had built to prevent the shadhā boats from exiting it when they entered it. When he destroyed them, what he wanted of entering the canal and exiting from it became easy for him.
