Translation

✧ The Drowning of Nusayr On Sunday, ten nights remaining of Shaʿbān, Abū Hamzah Nusayr, the commander of the shadhawāt, drowned. The cause of his drowning was that al-Muwaffaq went out early to fight and ordered Nusayr to make for a bridge that the villain had built on the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb, below the two bridges he had erected over the river, and he dispersed his men on the flanks. Nusayr hastened and entered the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb at the start of the tide with a number of his shadhawāt. The water carried them and pressed them against the bridge, and a number of al-Muwaffaq's shadhawāt entered with his ghilmān, whom he had not ordered to enter, and collided with Nusayr's shadhawāt, and they struck one another, and the sailors could no longer manage them. The Zanj saw that and gathered on both banks of the river. The sailors threw themselves into the water fearing the Zanj, and the Zanj boarded the shadhawāt. They killed some of the fighters, and most of them drowned. Nusayr held out against them until he feared capture, then he threw himself into the water and drowned. Al-Muwaffaq spent his day fighting them, plundering them, and burning their dwellings, and he remained victorious over them throughout the day. That day, Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ was among the fiercest of the people in fighting al-Muwaffaq's men. He stood his ground until an ambush of al-Muwaffaq's came out against him, his companions were routed, and Sulaymān was wounded in his leg. He fell on his face in a place where there was a fire, with some embers still in it, and part of his body was burned. His companions carried him off after he had nearly been captured, and al-Muwaffaq withdrew safe and victorious. Al-Muwaffaq was afflicted with joint disease, which kept him during the month of Shaʿbān, the month of Ramaḍān, and some days of Shawwāl. He desisted from fighting the Zanj, then he recovered and regained his health, and ordered the preparation of the implements of war.
