✧ Events in al-Andalus and Ifrīqiyah In the year 268 AH, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ruler of al-Andalus, sent an army with his son al-Mundhir against those who had rebelled against him. He made for the city of Saraqusṭah, destroyed its crops, and laid waste its territory. He conquered the fortress of Rūṭah, taking from it ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Rūṭī, who was among the bravest people of his time. He advanced to the monastery of Tarūjah and the territory of Muḥammad b. Markab b. Mūsā, and ravaged both with raiding. He made for the city of Lāradah and Qarṭājah, where Ismāʿīl b. Mūsā was. He fought him, and Ismāʿīl submitted in obedience, abandoned opposition, and gave hostages for that. He made for the city of Anqarah, which belonged to the polytheists, conquered fortresses there, and returned. In the same year, Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad b. al-Aghlab fell upon the people of the land of al-Zāb. Their notables had come before him, and he treated them well, gave them gifts, clothed them, and mounted them. Then he killed most of them, even the children, and carried them on carts to a pit and threw them into it. In the same year, a raiding party in Sicily set out, its commander being a man known as Abū al-Thawr. The army of the Byzantines met them, and the Muslims were all struck down except seven men. Al-Ḥasan b. al-ʿAbbās was dismissed from Sicily, and Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl was appointed over it. He dispatched raiding parties in every direction of Sicily. He himself went out with a great levy and gathering, and marched to the city of Qaṭāniyah and destroyed its crops. Then he moved to the people of the shalandiyyah and fought them, inflicting many casualties among them. Then he moved to Ṭabarmīn and ruined its crops. Then he moved on and met the Byzantine forces. They fought, and the Byzantines were routed, and most of them were killed. The number of slain was three thousand, and their heads reached Balarm. Then the Muslims marched to a fortress that the Byzantines had recently built and named Madīnat al-Malik. The Muslims took it by force, killed its fighting men, and took its inhabitants captive.
