✧ The battle between al-Muʿtaḍid and the Arabs In the year two hundred sixty-eight AH, Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. al-Muwaffaq — who is al-Muʿtaḍid bi-llāh — fell upon a group of Arabs who were carrying provisions to the camp of the Wicked One. He killed a number of them, captured the rest, and plundered what they had with them, and he sent to al-Baṣrah those who would remain there for the purpose of cutting off provisions. Al-Muwaffaq dispatched Rashīq, the client of Abū al-ʿAbbās, and he fell upon a group of Banū Tamīm who were bringing provisions to the Wicked One. He killed most of them and captured a group of them, and he carried the captives and the heads to al-Muwaffaqiyyah. Al-Muwaffaq gave orders concerning them, and they were stood opposite the camp of the Zanj. Among them was a man who acted as an intermediary between the leader of the Zanj and the Arabs in bringing provisions. His hand and his leg were cut off, and he was thrown into the camp of the Wicked One. He ordered the necks of the captives to be struck, and by that, provisions were entirely cut off from the Wicked One. The siege harmed them and weakened their bodies. He would ask a captive or one who had sought amnesty about when he had last seen bread, and he would say: “My last sight of it was a long time ago.” When they reached this state, al-Muwaffaq saw fit to continue the war against them to increase their harm and hardship. The number of those seeking amnesty increased at this time, and many of the Wicked One’s companions came out and dispersed through the villages and distant canals in search of food. This reached al-Muwaffaq, and he ordered a group of the commanders of his black slave-soldiers to make for those places and call those in them to join him; whoever refused, they killed. They killed many of them, and more than that came to him. When the number of those seeking amnesty with al-Muwaffaq became great, he reviewed them. Whoever had strength and endurance, he treated well and mixed him with his slave-soldiers. Whoever among them was weak, or an old man, or wounded with a wound that had become chronic, he clothed him and gave him dirhams, and ordered him to be carried to the camp of the Wicked One and thrown there, and commanded him to mention what he had seen of al-Muwaffaq’s kindness toward those who had come over to him, and that this was his disposition toward them. Thus he achieved what he wanted in winning over the Wicked One’s companions. Al-Muwaffaq and his son Abū al-ʿAbbās kept up the fighting against the Wicked One, sometimes this one and sometimes that one. Abū al-ʿAbbās was wounded, then recovered. Among the notables of the Wicked One’s commanders who were killed was Bahbūd b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb. He used to go out often in the sumayriyyah boats, and he would set up banners resembling al-Muwaffaq’s banners. When he saw someone he considered weak, he would seize him, and he took a great deal of wealth from that. Abū al-ʿAbbās engaged him in one of his outings, and he escaped after coming close to destruction. Then he went out another time and saw a sumayriyyah boat in which were some of Abū al-ʿAbbās’s men. He made for it, greedy to seize it. Its people fought him, and a slave of Abū al-ʿAbbās’s slaves thrust him in the belly with a spear, and he fell into the water. His companions took him and carried him to the camp of the Wicked One, and he died before reaching it. God relieved the Muslims of his evil. His killing was one of the greatest conquests. The calamity was immense for the Wicked One and his companions, and their grief over him was intense. The news of his killing reached al-Muwaffaq, and he summoned that slave, rewarded him, clothed him, gave him a collar, and increased his stipend. He did the like for everyone who had been with him in that sumayriyyah. Then al-Muwaffaq captured al-Dhawāʾibī, who had been inclining toward the leader of the Zanj.
