✧ The Entry of the Zanj into Rāmahurmuz In the year two hundred and sixty-six, ʿAlī b. Abān and the Zanj entered Rāmahurmuz. The reason for that was that Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh feared ʿAlī b. Abān because of what was in ʿAlī’s heart against him, on account of what we have mentioned. So he wrote to Ankalāy b. al-ʿAlawī and asked him to request his father to lift ʿAlī’s hand from him and attach him to himself. That increased ʿAlī’s anger against him. He wrote to the Abomination authorizing the move against Muḥammad, and making that the path to demanding the land tax. He permitted him, so he wrote to Muḥammad demanding from him the conveyance of the land tax, but he delayed and stalled him. So ʿAlī marched against him while he was in Rāmahurmuz. Muḥammad fled from it, and ʿAlī and the Zanj entered it and ravaged it. Muḥammad reached his farthest strongholds, and ʿAlī returned laden with spoils. Muḥammad became afraid, so he wrote to him seeking a peace settlement. He agreed to that on condition of wealth he would pay to him, so he conveyed to him two hundred thousand dirhams. He sent it to the leader of the Zanj and refrained from Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh and his districts. In this year there was a battle for the Zanj in which they were defeated. The reason was that Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh wrote to ʿAlī b. Abān, after the peace, asking him for assistance against the Kurds of Dārinān, on condition that he would give him and his companions their spoils. ʿAlī wrote to his master seeking permission, and he wrote to him: “Dispatch an army to him, but remain yourself. Do not send anyone until you have secured hostages from him, and do not feel safe from his attacking and seeking vengeance.” So ʿAlī wrote to Muḥammad demanding from him oaths and hostages. He offered him oaths but delayed with the hostages. But out of ʿAlī’s eagerness for spoils, he dispatched an army to him. Muḥammad sent with them a party of his own companions against the Kurds. The Kurds came out against them and fought them, and the battle became entangled. Muḥammad’s companions abandoned the Zanj, so they were defeated and the Kurds killed a great many of them. Muḥammad had prepared men to intercept them if they were defeated, and they encountered them, fell upon them, plundered them, and took their mounts. They returned in the worst condition. ʿAlī wrote to the Abomination about that, and he rebuked him, saying: “You have ruined my affair by leaving the hostages.” He wrote to Muḥammad threatening him, so Muḥammad became afraid and wrote to him in submission and humility, returning some of the mounts, and said: “I raided those who had them, and I recovered these from them.” The Abomination displayed anger at him, so Muḥammad sent to him Bāhbūdh and Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Kirmānī, who were the closest of people to ʿAlī. He guaranteed them wealth if they made peace for him with ʿAlī and his master. They did that, and the Abomination answered them by accepting satisfaction with Muḥammad on condition that he proclaim his name from the pulpits of his lands. They informed Muḥammad of that, and he agreed to everything they requested, but he began to evade the invocation for him on the pulpits. Then ʿAlī prepared for Mattūth and marched to it, but he did not conquer it, so he returned. He made ladders, the devices with which one climbs the wall, and prepared to aim for it. Manṣūr al-Balkhī learned of that, and he was at that time in the districts of al-Ahwāz. When ʿAlī marched to it, Masrūr marched against him and met him before sunset while he was encamped before it. When the Zanj saw the vanguard of Masrūr’s cavalry, they fled in the ugliest flight and abandoned everything they had prepared. A great many of them were killed, and ʿAlī turned back defeated. Only a little while passed before news reached him of the advance of al-Muwaffaq. ʿAlī had no battle after Mattūth until Sūq al-Khamīs and Ṭahthā were conquered by al-Muwaffaq. Then his master wrote to him ordering him to return to him, urging him most urgently.
