أَخْبَارِ الزَّنْجِ مَعَ أَغْرَتْمِشَ فِي سَنَةُ سِتٍّ وَسِتِّينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ وَلِيَ أَغْرَتَمْشُ مَا كَانَ يَتَوَلَّاهُ تِكِينُ الْبُخَارِيُّ مِنْ أَعْمَالِ الْأَهْوَازِ، فَدَخَلَ تُسْتَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ، وَمَعَهُ أَنَا، وَمَطَرُ بْنُ جَامِعٍ، وَقَتَلَ مَطَرُ بْنُ جَامِعٍ جَعْفَرَوَيْهِ غُلَامَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبَانٍ، وَجَمَاعَةً مَعَهُ كَانُوا مَأْسُورِينَ، وَسَارُوا إِلَى عَسْكَرِ مُكْرَمٍ، وَأَتَاهُمُ الزَّنْجُ هُنَاكَ مَعَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبَانٍ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا كَثْرَةَ الزَّنْجِ قَطَعُوا الْجِسْرَ وَتَحَاجَزُوا، وَرَجَعَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى الْأَهْوَازِ، وَأَقَامَ أَخُوهُ الْخَلِيلُ بِالْمَسْرُقَانِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ مِنَ الزَّنْجِ. وَسَارَ أَغْرَتَمْشُ، وَمَنْ مَعَهُ نَحْوَ الْخَلِيلِ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ قَنْطَرَةِ أَرْبَكَ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَى أَخِيهِ عَلِيٍّ، فَوَافَاهُ فِي النَّهْرِ، وَأَخَافَ أَصْحَابَهُ الَّذِينَ خَلَّفَهُمْ بِالْأَهْوَازِ، فَارْتَحَلُوا إِلَى نَهْرِ السِّدْرَةِ، وَتَحَارَبَ عَلِيٌّ وَأَغْرَتَمْشُ يَوْمَهُمْ. ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى الْأَهْوَازِ، فَلَمْ يَجِدْ أَصْحَابَهُ الَّذِينَ خَلَّفَهُمْ بِالْأَهْوَازِ، فَوَجَّهَ مَنْ يَرُدَّهُمْ مِنْ نَهْرِ السِّدْرَةِ، فَعَسُرَ عَلَيْهِمْ ذَلِكَ، فَتَبِعَهُمْ، وَأَقَامَ مَعَهُمْ، وَرَجَعَ أَغْرَتَمْشُ فَنَزَلَ عَسْكَرَ مُكْرَمٍ، وَاسْتَعَدَّ عَلِيٌّ لِقِتَالِهِمْ. وَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ أَغْرَتَمْشَ، وَمَنْ مَعَهُ مِنْ عَسْكَرِ الْخَلِيفَةِ، فَسَارُوا إِلَيْهِ، فَكَمَنَ لَهُمْ عَلِيٌّ وَقَدِمَ الْخَلِيلُ إِلَى قِتَالِهِمْ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا، فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ النَّهَارِ لِأَصْحَابِ الْخَلِيفَةِ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْكَمِينُ، فَانْهَزَمُوا وَأُسِرَ مَطَرُ بْنُ جَامِعٍ، وَعِدَّةٌ مِنَ الْقُوَّادِ، فَقَتَلَهُ عَلِيٌّ بِغُلَامِهِ جَعْفَرَوَيْهِ، وَعَادَ إِلَى الْأَهْوَازِ، وَأَرْسَلَ رُءُوسَ الْقَتْلَى إِلَى الْخَبِيثِ الْعَلَوِيِّ. وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ، وَأَغَرَتَمْشُ بَعْدُ فِي حُرُوبِهِمْ عَلَى السَّوَاءِ، وَصَرَفَ صَاحِبُ الزَّنْجِ أَكَثْرَ جُنُودِهِ إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبَانٍ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ أَغْرَتَمْشُ وَادَعَهُ، وَجَعَلَ عَلِيٌّ يُغِيرُ عَلَى النَّوَاحِي، فَمِنْ ذَلِكَ أَنَّهُ أَغَارَ عَلَى قَرْيَةِ بَيْرُوذَ فَنَهَبَهَا، وَوَجَّهَ الْغَنَائِمَ إِلَى صَاحِبِهِ.
Translation
✧ Reports of the Zanj with Aghartamish In the year two hundred and sixty-six, Aghartamish took charge of what Takīn al-Bukhārī had been administering of the districts of al-Ahwāz. He entered Tustar in Ramadan, accompanied by me and Maṭar b. Jāmiʿ. Maṭar b. Jāmiʿ killed Jaʿfarawayh, the servant of ʿAlī b. Abān, and a group with him who were prisoners, and they marched to ʿAskar Mukram. The Zanj came to them there with ʿAlī b. Abān, and they fought. When they saw the great number of the Zanj, they cut the bridge and held back from one another. ʿAlī returned to al-Ahwāz, while his brother al-Khalīl stayed at al-Masruqān with a group of the Zanj. Aghartamish and those with him marched toward al-Khalīl, coming to him from the bridge of Arbak. He wrote to his brother ʿAlī, who joined him at the river. He frightened his companions whom he had left behind in al-Ahwāz, so they moved to Nahr al-Sidrah. ʿAlī and Aghartamish fought that day. Then ʿAlī returned to al-Ahwāz, but he did not find his companions whom he had left behind in al-Ahwāz. He sent someone to bring them back from Nahr al-Sidrah, but that proved difficult for them. He followed them and stayed with them. Aghartamish returned and encamped at ʿAskar Mukram. ʿAlī prepared to fight them. This reached Aghartamish and those with him from the caliph's army, so they marched against him. ʿAlī lay in ambush for them, and al-Khalīl advanced to fight them. They fought. The beginning of the day favored the caliph's men, then the ambush came out against them, and they were routed. Maṭar b. Jāmiʿ and a number of commanders were taken prisoner. ʿAlī killed him in retaliation for his servant Jaʿfarawayh, and he returned to al-Ahwāz. He sent the heads of the slain to the Wicked Alid. After that, ʿAlī and Aghartamish were on equal footing in their wars. The leader of the Zanj diverted most of his troops to ʿAlī b. Abān. When Aghartamish saw that, he made peace with him. ʿAlī began raiding the surrounding districts. Among that, he raided the village of Bayrūdh and plundered it, and he sent the spoils to his master.
