وَفِيهَا كَانَتْ وَقْعَةٌ بَيْنَ الْخُجُسْتَانِيِّ، وَعَمْرِو بْنِ اللَّيْثِ  انْهَزَمَ فِيهَا عَمْرٌو، وَدَخَلَ الْخُجُسْتَانِيُّ نَيْسَابُورَ، أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا عَامِلَ عَمْرٍو، وَمَنْ ✧ Mention of Several Events In the year 266 AH, ʿAmr b. al-Layth appointed ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir as his deputy over the shurṭah in Baghdādh and Sāmarrāʾ in Ṣafar, and al-Muwaffaq and ʿAmr b. al-Layth bestowed robes of honor upon him. In the same year, in Ṣafar, Asātikīn gained control over the shurṭah—which is now among the districts of Sijistān—and over al-Rayy, and expelled Khatalankhajūr, its governor, from it. Then he went to Qazwīn, over which the brother of Kayghalagh was governor, and made peace with him. Asātikīn entered Qazwīn, then returned to al-Rayy. In the same year, a raiding party of the Byzantine raiders came to Tall Yas-hā, in the territory of Diyār Rabīʿah, and captured about two hundred and fifty persons, and mutilated the Muslims. The people of al-Mawṣil and Naṣībīn rose against them, and the Byzantines withdrew. In the same year, Abū al-Sāj died at Jundaysābūr, on his return from the army of ʿAmr b. al-Layth to Baghdādh; and before him Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir had died. ʿAmr b. al-Layth appointed in that year Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Dulaf over Iṣbahān. He appointed Muḥammad b. Abī al-Sāj over the road to Makkah and the two holy sanctuaries. In the same year, Isḥāq b. Kundāj separated from Aḥmad b. Mūsā b. Bughā. The reason for that was that when Aḥmad marched to al-Jazīrah, and Mūsā b. Atāmish took charge of Diyār Rabīʿah, Isḥāq b. Kundāj disapproved of that, left his army, and marched to Balad. He fell upon the Jacobite Kurds, defeated them, and seized their wealth. Then he encountered Ibn Musāwir the Khārijite and killed him. He proceeded to al-Mawṣil and made an agreement with its people for a sum of money they had prepared. There was a great commander at Maʿlathāyā, named ʿAlī b. Dāwūd, who was the spokesman for the people of al-Mawṣil with him and the defender. Ibn Kundāj marched against him. When the news reached him, he left Maʿlathāyā and crossed the Tigris, accompanied by Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn, to Isḥāq b. Ayyūb b. Aḥmad al-Taghlibī al-ʿAdawī. They all gathered, and their number reached about fifteen thousand. Ibn Kundāj heard of their gathering, so he crossed to Balad, and crossed the Tigris toward him while he was with three thousand, and marched to Nahr Ayyūb. They met at Karāthā, which is known today as Tall Mūsā, and drew up for battle. The commander of the left wing of Ibn Ayyūb sent word to Ibn Kundāj, saying: "I am in the left wing, so charge against me and I will flee." He did that, and the left wing of Ibn Ayyūb fled, and the rest followed. Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn and ʿAlī b. Dāwūd marched to Naysābūr, and Ibn Ayyūb took the direction of Naṣībīn. Ibn Kundāj pursued him. Ibn Ayyūb moved from Naṣībīn to Āmid, and Ibn Kundāj took possession of Naṣībīn and Diyār Rabīʿah. Ibn Ayyūb sought refuge with ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh al-Shaybānī, who was at Āmid, and he aided him, and sought reinforcement from Abū al-Muʿizz b. Mūsā b. Zurārah, who was at Arzan, and he aided him as well. Ibn Kundāj returned to al-Mawṣil, and a covenant from the caliph al-Muʿtamid reached him granting him the governorship of al-Mawṣil, so he returned to it. Ibn al-Shaykh, Ibn Zurārah, and others sent to him offering him two hundred thousand dinars to leave them in their offices, but he did not respond to them. They united to fight him. When he saw that, he granted them what they sought and withdrew from them, and they headed for their lands. In the same year, the Muslim fleet and the Byzantine fleet met near Sicily, and a fierce battle took place between them. The Byzantines defeated the Muslims and captured their ship, and those of them who survived fled to the city of Palermo in Sicily. In the same year, there was severe dearth and great famine in Ifrīqiyah, so that food supplies almost disappeared. In the same year, the people of Ḥimṣ killed their governor ʿĪsā al-Karkhī. In the same year, Luʾluʾ, the page of Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, made a night raid from Rābiyat Banī Tamīm against Mūsā b. Atāmish, who was at Raʾs al-ʿAyn. He captured him in a raid and sent him to al-Raqqah. Then Luʾluʾ encountered Aḥmad b. Mūsā b. Atāmish b. Mūsā b. Atāmish and the Bedouin with him, and Luʾluʾ was routed. The Bedouin returned to Aḥmad's camp to plunder it, but Luʾluʾ and his companions turned upon them, and they fled. Their rout reached Qarqīsiyā, then they marched to Baghdādh and Sāmarrāʾ. I have mentioned previously that the one who captured Mūsā was not Luʾluʾ, according to what the historians of Egypt have related. In the same year, there was a battle between Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and Baktimur, and Baktimur was defeated and marched to Baghdādh. In the same year, al-Khujustānī fell upon al-Ḥasan b. Zayd at Jurjān while he was unaware, and he fled to Āmul. Al-Khujustānī gained control over Jurjān and the outskirts of Ṭabaristān. When al-Ḥasan had marched from Ṭabaristān to Jurjān, he had left as his deputy in Sāriyah al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥusayn al-Aṣghar al-ʿAqīqī. When al-Ḥasan b. Zayd was routed, al-ʿAqīqī announced in Sāriyah that he had been killed and called for allegiance to himself. A group pledged allegiance to him, but al-Ḥasan b. Zayd came upon him and fought him, then captured him and killed him. In the same year, there was a battle between al-Khujustānī and ʿAmr b. al-Layth in which ʿAmr was defeated. Al-Khujustānī entered Naysābūr and expelled ʿAmr's governor and those who inclined toward him. In the same year, there was a disturbance in al-Madīnah and its environs between the ʿAlawīs and the Jaʿfarīs. In the same year, the Bedouin fell upon the covering of the Kaʿbah and plundered it. Part of it fell to the master of the Zanj, and the pilgrims suffered great hardship in it. In the same year, the Byzantines raided the Byzantine territory of Diyār Rabīʿah, and the people were called out for war. They set out in severe cold in which it was impossible to enter the pass. In the same year, Sīmā, the deputy of Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, raided the Syrian frontier fortresses with three hundred men from the people of Ṭarsūs. About four thousand from the land of Haraqlah came out against them. They fought fiercely, and the Muslims killed a great number of the enemy; a group of the Muslims was also killed. In the same year, there was war at the city of the Prophet ﷺ between the ʿAlawīs and the Jaʿfarīs. Prices rose there until food supplies became unobtainable. The dearth spread to all the lands of the Ḥijāz, al-ʿIrāq, al-Mawṣil, al-Jazīrah, al-Shām, and elsewhere, but it did not reach the severity that was in al-Madīnah. In the same year, the people in all the lands under the caliph's rule were in great hardship because of the domination of the commanders and army officers over affairs, and the lack of oversight and security from disapproval of what they perpetrated and did, due to al-Muwaffaq's preoccupation with fighting the master of the Zanj, the incapacity of the caliph al-Muʿtamid, and his involvement in other matters. In the same year, the heat was intense in Tishrīn al-Thānī, then the cold became intense until the water froze. In the same year, Muḥammad b. Abī al-Sāj arrived at Makkah. Al-Makhzūmī fought him, but Muḥammad defeated him and plundered his wealth. That was on the Day of Tarwiyah. In the same year, Kayghalagh marched to al-Jabal, and Baktimur returned to al-Dīnawar. In this year, Hārūn b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Mūsā al-Hāshimī led the people in the pilgrimage. In the same year, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dākhil—the caliph of al-Andalus and the lands of the Maghrib—built ships on the river of Qurṭubah to enter the surrounding ocean with them, so that armies might travel along its coasts to some lands to fight them. When the ships entered the surrounding ocean, they broke apart and disintegrated, and only a few of their crews survived, while most of them drowned.
