He wept bitterly and said: “I remembered my father, that he might see me in such a state.” He was wearing black garments, and he said: “My father, when an ascetic, self-denying man came to him, would send for me to look at him, loving that I be like him.” When he left the court session, he would take off his black clothes and say: “Do you think I will die while wearing this?” He died in Iṣbahān in Ramaḍān of this year. I immediately went down from Surra man raʾā to Baghdad until I knocked on the door of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ayyūb. He came out to me, and I said: “Good news!” He said: “May God give you good news; what is it?” I said: “The caliph's decree has come appointing you to the judiciary of one of the two cities: either Baghdad or Surra man raʾā—al-Bajalī was uncertain.” He said: “He closed the door and said: ‘May God give you news of the Fire.’” The sultan's men came to him, but he did not show himself to them, so they left. Al-Muʿtazz wrote from him in his own hand, and he wrote minutely. ʿAlī said: “You have taken, O Commander of the Faithful, to the ill-omen of the ḥadīth scholars.” Al-Muʿtazz laughed or something like that. More than one of our shaykhs informed us of this. Al-Muʿtazz had him attend a meal, and he ate in his presence. And he granted him all the estates of Ḥarb, and that continued to be in his possession until the days of al-Muʿtaḍid. He died in Shawwāl of the year 265 AH. I began to reflect, not knowing how my state is with God Almighty, since I have so often come to this place.” He said: “Then sleep overcame me, and it was as if a speaker said: ‘O ʿAlī, do you invite to your house anyone but those you love?’ I awoke, and what I had been feeling was relieved.” And from Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. al-Mahdī, who said: I heard ʿAlī b. al-Muwaffaq say: “One day I went out to give the call to prayer, and I found a piece of paper. I took it and put it in my sleeve. Then I performed the iqāmah and prayed. When I had prayed, I read it, and on it was written: ‘In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate: O ʿAlī b. al-Muwaffaq, do you fear poverty when I am your Lord?’” And I heard ʿAlī b. al-Muwaffaq say, times I cannot count: “O God, if You know that I worship You out of fear of Your Fire, then punish me with it. If You know that I worship You out of love for Your Garden and longing for it, then forbid it to me. He set aside provisions for his family for a year, then tied up his clothes and set out for the pilgrimage. I was bewildered by my situation, and I began counting the days, saying: “The term is near; how will I repay this thousand?” When it was the twenty-ninth day, I went out for the dawn prayer, and I saw the lane from its beginning to its end with black sacks thrown down, and the porters sitting on them. I said: “I wonder for whom this is?” When I finished the dawn prayer, one of the porters came in to me and said: “This wheat was sent by so-and-so and so-and-so, so that you may use it for some of your needs.” He ordered it sold, and I paid the thousand dirhams on behalf of Abū Ḥafṣ, and there was a surplus. When Abū Ḥafṣ returned from the pilgrimage, the first words he spoke to me were: “What was the thought that occupied you for a month? Could you not trust in your Lord?!” And from Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd b. Ismāʿīl, who said: I entered with Abū Ḥafṣ upon a sick man. His way in dispensing ḥadīth was that he would ask whoever came to him about city after city, whether anyone remained there who transmitted ḥadīth. When it was said to him: “No transmitter remains there,” he would go out to it secretly, then transmit to them and return. He was at the utmost in religious scrupulousness. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Muḥammad b. Muslim b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Rāzī, known as Ibn Wārah. Muḥammad b. I am the one of the two journeys.” I said: “Who transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ: ‘Indeed, some poetry is wisdom, and some eloquence is sorcery’?” He said: “One of our companions narrated to me.” I said: “Who are your companions?” He said: “Abū Nuʿaym and Qabīṣah.” He said: I said: “O boy, bring me the whip.” He said: The boy brought me the whip, and I ordered him, and he struck him fifty times. Then I said: “You leave my presence while I do not feel safe that you will say: ‘One of our boys narrated to us.’” Ibn Wārah died in al-Rayy in this year. It is also said: the year 270. Muḥammad b. The nights made peace with you, and you were deceived by them, for at the clearness of the nights, trouble occurs. Aḥmad b. Manṣūr al-Ramādī. Among the notables who died in this year: Aḥmad b.
