Translation
✧ The death of Yaʿqūb and the succession of his brother ʿAmr In this year Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth al-Ṣaffār died on the ninth of Shawwāl in Jundaysābūr, one of the districts of al-Ahwāz. His illness was colic. The physicians ordered him to take an enema with medicine, but he did not do so and chose death. Al-Muʿtamid had already sent him a messenger and a letter seeking to win him over and appease him, and to grant him the affairs of Fārs. The messenger arrived while Yaʿqūb was ill. He sat up for him, placed a sword by him, and a loaf of coarse bread, with him were onions. He summoned the messenger, who delivered the message. He said to him: "Tell the caliph that I am sick. If I die, then I have rested from you and you have rested from me. If I recover, then there is nothing between me and you except this sword, until I take my vengeance, or you break me and wound me, and I return to this bread and onions." He sent the messenger back, and Yaʿqūb did not linger before he died. Al-Ḥasan b. Zayd al-ʿAlawī used to call Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth al-Sindān (the anvil) because of his steadfastness. Yaʿqūb had conquered al-Rukhkhaj and killed its king. Its people embraced Islam at his hands. His kingdom was vast in borders. The name of its king was Kabtīr. He used to be carried on a bed of gold carried by twelve men. He built a house on a high mountain and called it Makkah. He claimed divinity. Yaʿqūb killed him. He conquered al-Khaljiyya, Zābul, and other places. I do not know in which year that was, so that I might mention it in that place. Yaʿqūb was intelligent and resolute. He used to say: "Whomever you have associated with for forty days and have not come to know his character, then you will not know it in a year." Something of his conduct has already been mentioned that indicates his intelligence. When he died, his brother ʿAmr b. al-Layth assumed the command after him. He wrote to the caliph declaring his obedience. Al-Muwaffaq appointed him over Khurāsān, Fārs, Iṣbahān, Sijistān, al-Sind, Kirmān, and the shurṭa in Baghdādh. He witnessed that and sent it to him with robes of honor.
