✧ The rebellion of al-ʿAbbās b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn against his father In this year, al-ʿAbbās b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn rebelled against his father. The reason for this was that his father had gone out to Syria and appointed his son al-ʿAbbās as his deputy, as we have mentioned. When he was far from Egypt, a group of those with al-ʿAbbās made attractive to him the seizure of wealth and the pleasures of moving to Barqa. He did that and came to Barqa in Rabīʿ al-Awwal. The news reached his father, so he returned to Egypt. He sent to his son, treated him gently, and tried to win his affection, but he would not return to him. He feared for those with him, and they advised him to head for Ifrīqiyya, so he marched there. He corresponded with the leaders of the Berbers; some of them came to him, while others refused. He wrote to Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab saying: "The Commander of the Faithful has entrusted me with the affairs of Ifrīqiyya and its provinces." He travelled until he reached the fortress of Labda, whose people opened it to him. He treated them with the worst treatment and plundered them. The people of the fortress went to Ilyās b. Manṣūr al-Nafūsī, the chief of the Ibāḍiyya there, and sought his help. He became angry at that and marched against al-ʿAbbās to fight him. Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab had sent an army to the governor of Tripoli and ordered him to fight al-ʿAbbās. They met and fought a fierce battle in which al-ʿAbbās fought with his own hand. On the following day, Ilyās b. Manṣūr al-Ibāḍī came upon them with twelve thousand Ibāḍīs, and he and the governor of Tripoli joined forces to fight al-ʿAbbās. Many of his companions were killed, and he fled in the ugliest flight, almost being captured, but a mawlā of his rescued him. They plundered his baggage and most of what he had carried from Egypt, and he returned to Barqa in the worst return. The news spread in Egypt that al-ʿAbbās had been routed, and his father grieved until it showed on him. He sent armies to him when he learned of his safety. They fought a battle in which both sides endured, then al-ʿAbbās and those with him fled, many of his companions were killed, and al-ʿAbbās was taken captive and brought to his father. He imprisoned him in a chamber adjacent to his house until the rest of the captives from his companions arrived. When they arrived, Aḥmad brought them before him, with al-ʿAbbās among them. His father ordered him to cut off the hands and feet of their leaders, and he did so. When he had finished, his father rebuked and blamed him, saying to him: "Is this how a leader and commander behaves? It would have been better for you to throw yourself before me and ask for pardon for yourself and for them. That would have been nobler for your standing, and you would have fulfilled their rights for having helped you and left their homelands for your sake." Then he ordered him to be struck with a hundred lashes, while his tears flowed down his cheeks out of compassion for his son. Then he returned him to the chamber and detained him. That was in the year two hundred and sixty-eight.
