Rabīʿah b. al-Walīd, Abū Sulaymān al-Ḥaḍramī. He narrated from his father and Ibn Wahb, and he was knowledgeable in the historical reports of Egypt. He died in this year. Khālid b. Yazīd, Abū al-Haytham al-Tamīmī. Khālid b. Yazīd, Abū al-Haytham al-Tamīmī. Of Khurasanian origin. He was one of the army scribes in Baghdad, and he had collected poetry. He lived a long time and became confused at the end of his life. It was said that melancholy overcame him, and it was said: rather, he loved a slave girl belonging to one of the kings and could not attain her. One day he heard a chanter reciting: He who has a grief in Syria, seeking it, / then in other than Syria have become the family and the grief. He wept until he fell on his face, then awoke confused, and that clung to him until he became mad. Before that he had been a boon companion of ʿAlī b. Hishām. The cause of that was that one day he recited to him: O you who leaves the body without a heart, / if I love you, what is my sin? O you alone in beauty, you have made me alone / from you by long abandonment and reproach. If my eye saw a trial, / is there any sin upon my heart? God is your reckoner for what is in me, just as / what I meet in your action toward me is my reckoning. So he made him one of his boon companions until he was killed. Then he accompanied al-Faḍl b. Marwān, who mentioned him to al-Muʿtaṣim while he was at al-Māḥūzah before Sāmarrāʾ was built. He ordered him to be brought and asked him to recite, and he was pleased with him. When Sāmarrāʾ was built, Khālid said: Joy has resolved upon the place / at Surra man raʾā for the Imam. [A land of delight and the great / shining victories.] And you see it as the most resembling abode / on earth to the Sacred Land. May God make it flourish by him / who has become through it the pride of mankind. Al-Faḍl admired them and conveyed them to al-Muʿtaṣim before anything had been said about Surra man raʾā. He ordered five thousand dirhams for Khālid. He entered upon Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī and recited to him: I reproached my heart in love for you, / and I did not find it accepting. So I obeyed a caller to you / and did not obey one who blames. No, by the One who made faces / represent the beauty of your face, I did not say that patience from you / is more beautiful than feigned youthfulness. So he gave him three hundred and fifty dinars. Khālid said: ʿAlī b. al-Jahm said to me: Give me your verse: Would that the softness that appeared / in your two cheeks were in your heart. I said: O ignorant one, have you seen anyone give away his child? From al-Qaʿnabī, who said: Khālid the scribe passed one day by boys, and they began to stone him and say: O Khālid, O cold one! He said to them: Woe to you! Am I cold, when I am the one who says: My master, you are—I did not say my master you are— / to any creature other than you, and the lover is a slave. Take my heart, for it has come to you with affection, / and it is a virgin that no passion has ever deflowered. A moist liver that passion crumbles / and a cheek in which, from tears, there is a furrow. From Thaʿlab, who said: No one among the poets spoke about the night except he came close, except Khālid the scribe, for he was original in his saying: And the lover's night is without an end. For he did not make an end for the night. He recited to us: She slept and did not grieve for the sleepless one, / and the lover's night is without an end. She did not know, after sleep had gone, / what tears did to the eye. O you whose glance has enslaved me, / save me from your tyrannical glance. And take for the heart—may the heart be your ransom— / from your enchanting, languid glance. From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muẓaffar al-Anbārī, who said: I heard Abū al-Qāsim b. Abī Ḥasanah say: I heard Khālid b. Yazīd the scribe say: While I was passing by Bāb al-Ṭāq, suddenly a rider behind me on a mule. When he caught up with me, he prodded me with his whip and said: Are you the one who said "The lover's night is without an end"? I said: Yes. He said: May your father be for God! Imruʾ al-Qays described the long night in three verses, and al-Nābighah described it in three verses, and Bashshār b. Burd described it in three verses, and you excelled them with half a word. May your father be for God! I said: How did Imruʾ al-Qays describe it? He said: By his saying: And a night like the waves of the sea, it let down its curtains / upon me with kinds of worries to test me. I said to it when it stretched its backbone / and followed with its hind parts and rose with its chest: O long night, clear away / with a morning, though the morning from you is not better. I said: And how did al-Nābighah describe it? He said: By his saying: Leave me to a grief, O Umaymah, that is wearying, / and a night I endure with slow stars. It lagged until I said it will not end, / and the one who guides the stars will not return. And a bosom whose wandering grief the night brought to rest, / in it worry is doubled from every side. I said: And how did Bashshār describe it? He said: By his saying: My two friends, what is with the darkness that it does not move away, / and what is with the light of morning that it does not become clear? I think the darkness has grown long, but the darkness has not grown long, / rather a wasting illness has lengthened the night. The shining day has lost its way, / or is time all night that never departs? I said to him: O my master, would you like poetry I have composed that no one has preceded me to? Whenever my humility intensifies / with a burning between my ribs, Horses of my tears race / in the racecourse of my cheek. He said: So he swung his leg off his mule and said: Take it and ride it, for you are more entitled to it than I. When he left, I asked about him and they said: He is Ḥabīb b. Aws al-Ṭāʾī. In another report: It was said to him: From where did you take your saying "And the lover's night is without an end"? He said: I stopped at a door upon which was a blind beggar saying: Night and day are the same. I took this from him. From Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad, known as Ibn al-Saqqā, who said: Jaḥẓah told me: Khālid the scribe said to me: I was in such straits that I lacked food for days. Then one day between sunset and the late evening prayer, suddenly my door was knocked. I said: Who is it? He said: One whom, if you come out to him, you will recognize. I went out and saw a man riding a donkey, wearing a black ṭaylasān, and on his head a tall cap, and with him a servant. He said to me: Are you the one who says: I say to illness: return to my body / out of love for something that happens because of you. He said: I said: Yes. He said: I would like you to give it up. I said: Does a man give up his child?! He smiled and said: O boy, give him what you have. He threw to me a sealed purse in black brocade. I said: I do not accept a gift from one I do not know, so who are you? He said: I am Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī. From Abū al-Haytham Khālid b. Yazīd the scribe, who said: When Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī was given the oath of allegiance to the caliphate, he sought me, and he knew me, and I was connected to some of his affairs. I was brought in to him, and he said to me: O Khālid, recite to me from your poetry. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, my poetry is not of the poetry about which the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Indeed, some poetry is wisdom." I merely jest and joke, and it is not what should be recited to the Commander of the Faithful. He said: I will not let this go, O Khālid, for the serious of literature and its jest are both serious. Recite to me. So I recited to him]: Live, for your love is a swift killer of me, / and wasting, if you do not join me, is my joiner. Longing has triumphed over a heartsick heart / in you, and illness over an emaciated body. They are between grief and wasting, / leaving me like a withered branch. The reproacher wept for me out of mercy, / and my weeping was for the weeping of the reproacher. Saʿdān b. Yazīd, Abū Muḥammad al-Bazzār. Saʿdān b. Yazīd, Abū Muḥammad al-Bazzār. Naṣr al-Ṣāʾigh said to me: Saʿdān b. Yazīd al-Bazzār looked at me and said: O Muḥammad b. Naṣr, I will tell you something that you will not report from me until death. I said: Yes. He said [to me]: I was on one of my journeys, and I stopped in one of the khans. It was a rainy night with thunder and lightning. The people of the khan slept, and I sat reflecting on the greatness of God, exalted be He. I fell asleep, and behold, a son of mine whom I had pushed away and made distant, and behold, he was humbling himself to me and drawing near to me, while I pushed him away and made him distant. Then I awoke, and a crier called out to me [from a side of the khan]: O Saʿdān b. Yazīd, you have seen His greatness, so understand. Thus He becomes angry with you when you disobey Him, and yearns for you when you please Him. From Abū Bakr b. Abī Maʿmar, who said: I heard Saʿdān b. Yazīd say: Alas, in the way of God is a life that I have lost, / and the loss of nights whose bliss has passed. Am I cheated of my days and do not seek their return, / and a night goes from me that I do not spend in prayer? The world is cut off and its gain goes away, / and its wise one seizes the good from it. Saʿdān died in Rajab of this year. Sulaymān b. al-Ḥasan, Abū Ayyūb, known as the brother of al-Muqtaṣid. Munīr, when he got up from the gathering, would go out to the desert with a group of his companions and gather something like alkali plants and other things, then enter the market and sell that, and live on it. He said: One day he went out with his companions, and behold, a lion was crouching on the road. It was said to him: This is the lion. He said to his companions: Stop.
