Translation
✧ 263 Then the year two hundred and sixty-three began. The battle of the Zanj When ʿAlī b. Abān was defeated while wounded, he returned to al-Ahwāz but did not remain there, and went to the camp of his companion to treat his wounds, appointing a deputy over his army in al-Ahwāz. When his wound healed, he returned to al-Ahwāz and dispatched his brother al-Khalīl b. Abān with a large army against Aḥmad b. Laythawayh, while Aḥmad was at ʿAskar Mukram. Aḥmad set an ambush for them and went out to fight them. The two forces met and fought most fiercely; the ambush then fell upon the Zanj, and they were routed, scattered, and killed. The routed survivors reached ʿAlī b. Abān, who dispatched a guard post to al-Masruqān. Aḥmad then sent against them thirty horsemen from among his companions, from their notables, and the Zanj killed them all.
