Translation

✧ Mention of several events (In it, ʿAlī b.) Muḥammad [b.] Abī al-Shawārib was appointed to the judiciary. In it, al-Ḥusayn b. Ṭāhir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir marched to al-Jabal in Ṣafar. In it, al-Ṣalānī, the governor of al-Rayy, died, and Kayghalagh was appointed over it. In it, Ibn Zaydawayh the physician was plundered. And Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAlī b. Yaʿqūb b. al-Manṣūr died. And Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq was appointed to the judiciary of the eastern side of Baghdādh, so that he held the judiciary of both sides. In it, Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq and Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, the emir of the Egyptian lands, fell out, and a firm estrangement arose between them. Al-Muwaffaq sought someone to take over the Egyptian lands, but found no one, because Ibn Ṭūlūn's servants and gifts were continually reaching the commanders in Iraq and the holders of offices, so he found no one to take them over. He wrote to Ibn Ṭūlūn threatening him with dismissal, and Ibn Ṭūlūn answered him with a reply (containing some harshness. So al-Muwaffaq sent Mūsā b. Bughā against him with a dense army, and he marched to al-Raqqah). The news reached Ibn Ṭūlūn, and he fortified the Egyptian lands. Ibn Bughā stayed at al-Raqqah for ten months, but was unable to proceed because of the lack of funds with him. The troops demanded their pay, but he had nothing to give them, so they turned against him and rose up against his vizier ʿAbd Allāh b. Sulaymān, who went into hiding. Ibn Bughā was forced to return to Iraq, and God spared Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn his mischief, so he gave away much wealth in alms. In it, Muḥammad b. ʿAttāb was killed. He was traveling to al-Sībīn, which was in his province, when the Bedouins killed him. In it, al-Qaṭṭān, the associate of Mufliḥ, was killed. He had been an agent in al-Mawṣil, and when he left it he was killed at al-Raqqah. In it, Kaftimur was given the command of the road to Makkah on behalf of ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Dāwūd. In it, fighting broke out between the tailors and the butchers in Makkah on the Day of Tarwiyah, until people feared that the pilgrimage would be invalidated. Then they held back from one another until the people had performed the pilgrimage, and seventeen men of them had been killed. And al-Faḍl b. Isḥāq b. al-Ḥasan b. al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad led the people in the pilgrimage. (In it, Muḥammad, the ruler of al-Andalus, sent his son al-Mundhir with an army against the Galician, who was in the city of Baṭalyaws. When he heard news of them, he left it and entered the fortress of Karkar, where he was besieged, and many of his companions were killed in Shawwāl.) Among the events of this year is what Abū Bakr b. Muḥammad b. Abī Ṭāhir al-Bazzār informed us of, with his chain of transmission on the authority of ʿAbd al-Khāliq b. al-Ḥasan, who said: I heard Abū ʿAwn al-Farāʾiḍī say: I went out to the assembly of Aḥmad b. Manṣūr al-Ziyādī in the year two hundred and sixty-two. When I reached the arch of al-Ḥarrānī, I saw a man who had ordered a woman to be seized and ordered her to be dragged. She said to him, "Fear God." He ordered that she be dragged, and she kept adjuring him by God while he kept ordering her to be dragged until she reached the gate of the bridge. When she despaired of herself, she raised her head to the sky and said: "Say: O God, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, You judge between Your servants concerning that in which they used to differ [39:46]; if this man is wronging me, then take him." Abū ʿAwn said: The man fell on his back dead while I was looking at him. He was carried on a bier, and the woman went away.
