✧ Reports on the Zanj In the year two hundred and sixty-two, the leader of the Zanj dispatched his armies to the region of al-Baṭīḥah and Dasht Maysān. The reason for that was that when those regions became empty of the sultan's troops because of Masrūr's return to fight Yaʿqūb, the master of the Zanj sent out his raiding parties into them, plundering and destroying. News reached him that al-Baṭīḥah was devoid of the sultan's soldiers, so he ordered Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ and a group of his companions to march to al-Ḥawānīt, and Sulaymān b. Mūsā to march to al-Qādisiyyah. Ibn al-Turkī arrived in thirty shadhas (boats), intending the Zanj camp, and he plundered and burned. So the villain wrote to Sulaymān b. Mūsā ordering him to prevent him from crossing. Sulaymān took the road against him and fought them for a month until he broke through. Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ withdrew from the aforementioned al-Bilāliyyah and their champions, a large group, in one hundred and fifty sumayriyyahs (boats). Masrūr had, before his departure from Wāsiṭ, sent to al-Muʿtamid a group of his companions to Sulaymān in shadhas, but Sulaymān captured them and routed them, taking seven shadhas from them and killing those of them who were taken prisoner. The Bāhilīs advised Sulaymān to fortify himself in ʿAqr, beyond Ṭahthā, and the thickets therein. They disliked his leaving them because he agreed with their conduct, and they feared the sultan. So he marched there and encamped at the village of Marwān, on the eastern side of the river of Ṭahthā, and gathered to himself the chiefs of the Bāhilīs. He wrote to the villain informing him of what he had done. The villain wrote back approving his opinion and ordering him to send what he had of provisions and livestock, so he sent that to him. It was reported to Sulaymān that Aghratmish and Ḥashīsh had advanced with cavalry, infantry, sumayriyyahs, and shadhas, intending to fight him. He was greatly alarmed. When they came in sight of him and he saw them, he took a group of his companions and marched on foot, going around behind Aghratmish. Aghratmish pressed on toward Sulaymān's camp. Sulaymān had ordered the one he left in charge of his army that none of them should show himself to Aghratmish's men, and that they should conceal themselves as much as they could until they heard the sound of their drums; when they heard them, they were to come out against him. Aghratmish advanced toward them, and Sulaymān's men were greatly alarmed, so they scattered. A band of them rose up and engaged them, occupying them from entering the camp. Sulaymān returned from behind them, beat his drums, and they threw themselves into the water to cross over to them. Aghratmish was routed, and those of the blacks who were at Ṭahthā appeared, putting the swords to them. Ḥashīsh was killed, Aghratmish fled, and the Zanj pursued him to his camp, obtaining what they wanted from it. They took from them shadhas containing money and other things. Aghratmish returned and snatched them from their hands. Then Sulaymān returned, victorious and laden with booty. He wrote to the master of the Zanj with the news and sent him the head of Ḥashīsh, who sent it on to ʿAlī b. Abān, who was in the regions of al-Ahwāz. Sulaymān also sent out a raiding party, and they captured eleven shadhas and killed their crews.
