Translation

✧ The preparation of Abū Aḥmad for marching to al-Baṣrah In the year 261 AH, in Shawwāl, al-Muʿtamid sat in the public court and appointed his son Jaʿfar as heir, giving him the title al-Mufawwiḍ ilā Allāh. He attached Mūsā b. Bughā to him and appointed him over Ifrīqīyah, Egypt, Syria, al-Jazīrah, al-Mawṣil, Armenia, the Khurāsān road, and Mihrajānqadhaq. He appointed his brother Abū Aḥmad as heir after Jaʿfar, giving him the title al-Nāṣir li-Dīn Allāh al-Muwaffaq, and appointed him over the East, Baghdādh, the Sawād, al-Kūfah, the Makkah road, al-Madīnah, Yemen, Kaskar, the districts of the Tigris, al-Ahwāz, Fāris, Iṣbahān, Qumm, Karaj, Dīnawar, al-Rayy, Zanjān, and al-Sind. He gave each of them two banners: a black one and a white one, and stipulated that if death befell him while Jaʿfar was still a minor, authority would go to al-Muwaffaq, then to Jaʿfar after him. The oath of allegiance was taken to that effect. Copies of the document were distributed, and a copy was sent with al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Shawārib to be hung in the Kaʿbah. Jaʿfar then appointed Mūsā over the Maghrib, and al-Muwaffaq was ordered to march to fight the Zanj. Al-Muwaffaq appointed Masrūr al-Balkhī over al-Ahwāz, al-Baṣrah, and the districts of the Tigris, and sent him in his vanguard in Dhū al-Ḥijjah. He resolved to march after him, but then there occurred the matter of Yaʿqūb al-Ṣaffār, which prevented him from marching.
