✧ Return of al-Ṣaffār to Fārs and the war between him and Ibn Wāṣil When the incident between ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mufliḥ and Ibn Wāṣil occurred as we have mentioned, news of the two reached Yaʿqūb al-Ṣaffār while he was in Sijistān. His greed for the dominion of the land of Fārs was renewed, and for seizing the wealth, treasuries, and weapons that Ibn Wāṣil had taken as booty from Ibn Mufliḥ, so he marched with haste. The news of his approach reached Ibn Wāṣil, and that he had encamped at al-Bayḍāʾ in the land of Fārs, while he was at al-Ahwāz. He turned away from it without pausing over anything. He sent his maternal uncle Abū Bilāl Mirdās to al-Ṣaffār, and he reached him and guaranteed Ibn Wāṣil's obedience. So Yaʿqūb al-Ṣaffār sent letters and messengers to Ibn Wāṣil in that regard, but Ibn Wāṣil detained them. He marched seeking al-Ṣaffār with the messengers with him, intending to conceal his news and to reach al-Ṣaffār suddenly without him knowing, so that he might attain his desire from him and strike him. He marched on an intensely hot day, over difficult terrain, thinking that his news was hidden from al-Ṣaffār. At noon their mounts grew weary, so they dismounted to rest. Many of Ibn Wāṣil's foot soldiers died of hunger and thirst. Their news reached al-Ṣaffār, so he gathered his companions and informed them of the news and marched. He said to Abū Bilāl: "Ibn Wāṣil has betrayed us, and Allāh is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs." Al-Ṣaffār proceeded toward Ibn Wāṣil, and when he drew near them and they learned of him, they were disheartened and their spirits weakened from resisting and fighting him, and they did not advance a step. When the distance between the two parties became a bowshot, Ibn Wāṣil's companions fled without fighting, and al-Ṣaffār's army pursued them. They seized from them all that they had taken as booty from Ibn Mufliḥ, and he took control of the land of Fārs, appointed his companions there, and set its affairs in order. (Ibn Wāṣil fled defeated, and he took his wealth from his fortress, which was forty thousand thousand dirhams. Yaʿqūb fell upon the people of Zamm because they had aided Ibn Wāṣil), and he contemplated seizing al-Ahwāz and other places.
