Translation

✧ Yaʿqūb's entry into Ṭabaristān In the year two hundred and sixty, Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth fought al-Ḥasan b. Zayd al-ʿAlawī, defeated him, and entered Ṭabaristān. The reason for that was that ʿAbd Allāh al-Sijzī [was] contending with Yaʿqūb for leadership in Sijistān, and Yaʿqūb overpowered him, so ʿAbd Allāh fled from him to Naysābūr. When Yaʿqūb marched to Naysābūr, as we have mentioned, ʿAbd Allāh fled to al-Ḥasan b. Zayd in Ṭabaristān. Yaʿqūb then marched in pursuit of him, and al-Ḥasan b. Zayd met him at the village of Sāriyah. Yaʿqūb had sent to al-Ḥasan asking him to send ʿAbd Allāh to him and to turn back from him, for he had only come for that, not to fight him. But al-Ḥasan did not hand him over, so Yaʿqūb fought him. Al-Ḥasan was defeated and went toward al-Sirr and the land of al-Daylam, while Yaʿqūb entered Sāriyah and Āmul and collected from their people the kharāj of one year. He then marched in pursuit of al-Ḥasan and went to some of the mountains of Ṭabaristān. Rains fell upon him continuously for about forty days, and he extricated himself only with severe hardship, and most of the mounts he had with him perished. Then he wanted to enter behind al-Ḥasan, so he stopped on the road he intended [to] take and ordered his companions to halt. He then advanced alone, examined the road, returned to them, and ordered them to turn back, saying to them: "There is no other road than this, and otherwise there is no way to him." The women of the people of that region had said to the men: "Let him enter; if he enters, we will suffice you against him, and it is upon us to take him captive for you." When he left Ṭabaristān, he reviewed his men and found missing among them forty thousand, and most of what he had with him of horses, camels, mules, and baggage was gone. He wrote to the caliph about what he had done to al-Ḥasan, namely the defeat, and marched to al-Rayy in pursuit of ʿAbd Allāh, because he had gone there after the defeat of al-Ḥasan. When Yaʿqūb approached it, he wrote to al-Ṣallānī, who was in charge of it, giving him the choice between handing over ʿAbd Allāh to him and his turning away from him, or fighting. So he handed over ʿAbd Allāh to him, and he departed from him, and he killed ʿAbd Allāh.
