The Year 259 AH
Translation
✧ The case of Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿUmarī Mention of Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿUmarī has already been given; his name is ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. The reason for his appearance in Egypt was that the Beja came on the day of the festival, plundered, killed, and returned laden with booty. They did this repeatedly. So this al-ʿUmarī went out in anger for the sake of God and the Muslims, and lay in ambush for them on their road. When they returned, he attacked them and killed their leader and those with him. He entered their lands, plundered them, and killed many among them. They plundered and took captives beyond count. He continued raiding them until they paid him the jizya, which they had not done before. The power of al-ʿUmarī grew strong, and his followers increased. When news of him reached Ibn Ṭūlūn, he sent a large army against him. When they met, al-ʿUmarī came forward and said to the commander of the army: "Ibn Ṭūlūn does not know my true situation, without doubt. I did not go out to cause corruption, and no Muslim or dhimmī has been harmed by me. I went out only seeking jihād. So write to the emir Aḥmad and inform him of my situation. If he orders you to withdraw, then withdraw. Otherwise, if he orders you otherwise, you will be excused." He did not grant him that, and fought him. The army of Ibn Ṭūlūn was defeated. When they reached him, they informed him of al-ʿUmarī's situation. He said: "You should have conveyed his situation to me, for he was helped against you because of your wrongdoing." And he left him alone. After some time, two slaves of al-ʿUmarī fell upon him and killed him. They carried his head to Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn. When they appeared before him, he asked them about the reason for killing him. They said: "We wanted to draw near to you by that." He killed them both, and ordered that al-ʿUmarī's head be washed, shrouded, and buried.
