Translation

✧ Yaqoub's taking possession of Naysabur In this year, in Shawwal, Yaʿqub b. al-Layth entered Naysabur. The reason for his march there was that ʿAbd Allah al-Sijzi had been contending with Yaʿqub in Sijistan; when Yaʿqub gained the upper hand over him, he fled from him to Muhammad b. Tahir. Yaʿqub sent to ask Ibn Tahir to hand him over, but he did not do so, so he marched towards him to Naysabur. When he drew near to it and wished to enter it, Muhammad b. Tahir sent to ask his permission to meet him, but he did not grant it, so he sent his uncles and the people of his house, and they met him. Then he entered Naysabur in Shawwal. Muhammad b. Tahir mounted and went in to him in his tent, and asked him about his condition, then rebuked him for his negligence in his office, and seized Muhammad b. Tahir and the people of his house, and appointed a governor over Naysabur. He sent to the caliph mentioning the negligence of Muhammad b. Tahir in his office, and that the people of Khurasan had asked him to march to them, and mentioning the dominance of the Alids over Tabaristan, and he exaggerated in this matter, but the caliph disapproved of that and commanded him to confine himself to what had been entrusted to him, and not to take with him the path of the opponents. It is said that the reason for Yaʿqub's taking possession of Naysabur was that which we mentioned in the year two hundred and fifty-seven, namely the weakness of Muhammad b. Tahir, the amir of Khurasan. When Yaʿqub ascertained that, and that he was unable to defend himself, he marched to Naysabur and wrote to Muhammad b. Tahir informing him that he had resolved to make for Tabaristan in order to carry out what the caliph had commanded him concerning al-Hasan b. Zayd, who had seized control of it, and that he would not interfere with anything in his province or with any of his retainers. Some of the close associates of Muhammad b. Tahir and some of his family, when they saw the decline of his affairs, inclined towards Yaʿqub, wrote to him, invited him, and made light of the matter of Yaʿqub to Muhammad (from Naysabur). They told him that he had nothing to fear from him, and they discouraged him from guarding against him. Muhammad relied on their words, until Yaʿqub came close to Naysabur. Then he sent to him a commander from among his commanders to reassure him, and commanded him to prevent him from going away from Naysabur if he wanted to do so. Then Yaʿqub reached Naysabur on the fourth of Shawwal and sent his brother ʿAmr b. al-Layth to Muhammad b. Tahir, brought him before him, seized him and bound him, and reproached him for neglecting his office and his inability to guard it. Then he seized all the people of his house—they were about one hundred and sixty men—and carried them to Sijistan, and took control of Khurasan, and appointed his deputies in the provinces. The governorship of Muhammad b. Tahir lasted eleven years, two months, and ten days. It is said that when Yaʿqub b. al-Layth entered Naysabur, he captured the Kharijite who was in Herat, claiming the caliphate for thirty years, and killed him, and his head was carried on a spear and paraded with it through the horizons and the regions, and with it a note on which that was written.
