✧ The March of Mūsā b. Bughā to Fight the Zanj In the year two hundred and fifty-nine, when thirteen [nights] remained of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Mūsā b. Bughā the Elder set out from Sāmarrāʾ to fight the Abominable One, and the Caliph al-Muʿtamid went out to bid him farewell, and bestowed a robe of honour upon him at his departure. He dispatched ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mufliḥ to al-Ahwāz, Isḥāq b. Kundājīq to al-Baṣrah, and Ibrāhīm b. Sīmā to Bādhāward, and commanded them to fight the leader of the Zanj. When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān took charge of al-Ahwāz, he marched to fight ʿAlī b. Abān, and they clashed, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was routed. Then he prepared himself and returned against ʿAlī, and inflicted upon him a mighty defeat, in which he killed a great slaughter of the Zanj and took many prisoners, and ʿAlī b. Abān and the Zanj fled. Then he sought to turn them back, but they would not return because of the fear that had entered them of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. When he saw that, he permitted them to depart, and they went off to the city of their master. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān arrived at the fortress of Mahdī to encamp there, and the leader of the Zanj sent ʿAlī b. Abān against him, and he engaged him, but could not overcome him. Then he went on, intending the place known as al-Dakkah. Ibrāhīm b. Sīmā was at al-Bādhāward, and ʿAlī b. Abān engaged him and routed him. Then he engaged him a second time, and Ibrāhīm routed him. ʿAlī departed by night, with guides through the reed-beds, until he reached the canal of Yaḥyā. News of him reached ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and he sent Ṭāshtumur against him with a band of the mawālī, but he could not reach him because of his fortification among the reeds and ḥalafāʾ grass. So he set fire to them, and they came out fleeing, and he took some of them prisoner, and the companions of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān returned with the prisoners and victory. Then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān marched toward ʿAlī b. Abān at a place where he had encamped. ʿAlī wrote to the leader of the Zanj asking for reinforcements, and he reinforced him with thirteen shadhawāt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came upon him, and they fought that day. When night came, ʿAlī selected from his companions a group whom he trusted and departed, leaving his camp to conceal his movement. He came upon ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from behind and made a night attack upon him, and inflicted upon him a little harm. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān withdrew, and ʿAlī captured from them four shadhawāt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān went to Dawlāb and stayed there. Ṭāshtumur marched against ʿAlī, came upon him and fought him, and ʿAlī was routed to the canal of al-Sidrah. He wrote seeking reinforcements from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and informed him of ʿAlī's defeat. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came to him and engaged ʿAlī at the canal of al-Sidrah in a mighty battle, and ʿAlī fled to the Abominable One, while ʿAbd al-Raḥmān encamped at Lunbān. He and Ibrāhīm b. Sīmā used to take turns marching to the camp of the Abominable One and inflicting defeats upon him, while Isḥāq b. Kundājīq was at al-Baṣrah, and he had cut off supplies from the Zanj. Their leader would gather his companions on the day of battle with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Ibrāhīm, and when the fighting was over he would send a party of them to al-Baṣrah to fight Isḥāq with them. They remained thus for more than ten months, until Mūsā b. Bughā was relieved of the war against the Zanj, and Masrūr al-Balkhī took charge of it, and news of that reached the Abominable One.
