✧ Yaʿqūb's Aiming for Fārs, and His Taking Balkh and Elsewhere In the year two hundred and fifty-seven, Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth marched to Fārs. Al-Muʿtamid sent to him, condemning that. So al-Muwaffaq wrote to him, granting him authority over Balkh, Ṭakhāristān, Sijistān, and al-Sind. He accepted that and returned. Then he marched to Balkh and Ṭakhāristān. When he reached Balkh, he encamped outside it and destroyed Nūshād, which were buildings that Dāwūd b. al-ʿAbbās b. Mābanjūr had constructed outside Balkh. Then Yaʿqūb marched from Balkh to Kābul and took possession of it. He seized Zunbīl and sent a messenger to the caliph, bearing a magnificent gift, which included idols he had taken from Kābul and those lands. Then he marched to Bust and stayed there for a year. The reason for his staying was that he wanted to depart, but he saw one of his commanders had already loaded some of his baggage. He became angry and said: "Do you depart before me?" And he stayed for a year. Then he returned to Sijistān, then went back to Herāt and besieged the city of Karūkh until he took it. Then he marched to Būshanj and seized al-Ḥusayn b. Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn al-Kabīr. Muḥammad b. Ṭāhir b. ʿAbd Allāh was sent to him, asking him to release him—he was the paternal uncle of his father, al-Ḥusayn b. Ṭāhir—but he did not do so, and he remained in his hands.
