Translation

✧ The march of al-Muwallad to fight the Zanj In this year, in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, al-Muʿtamid ordered Aḥmad al-Muwallad to march to al-Baṣrah to fight the Zanj. He encamped at al-Ubullah, and Barriyyah came and encamped at al-Baṣrah, and a great multitude of its people gathered to him. He sent the ʿAlawī to fight al-Muwallad Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad, so he marched against him and fought him for ten days. Then al-Muwallad resolved to remain, so the ʿAlawī wrote to Yaḥyā ordering him to launch a night attack on al-Muwallad, and he sent the shadhā with Abū al-Layth al-Iṣfahānī. He attacked him by night, and al-Muwallad rose and fought him that night, and from the next day until the afternoon, then he fled from him. The Zanj entered his camp and plundered what was in it. Yaḥyā pursued him to al-Jāmidah, fell upon its people, plundered all those villages, and shed whatever blood he could. Then he returned to Nahr Maʿqil.
