انْهِزَامِ سَعِيدٍ مِنَ الزَّنْجِ وَوِلَايَةِ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْبَصْرَةَ وَفِيهَا أَوْقَعَ الْعَلَوِيُّ صَاحِبُ الزَّنْجِ بِسَعِيدٍ، وَكَانَ يُسَيِّرُ إِلَيْهِ جَيْشًا، فَأَوْقَعُوا بِهِ لَيْلًا، وَأَصَابُوا مَقْتَلَةً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ سَعِيدٍ، فَقَتَلُوا خَلْقًا كَثِيرًا، وَأَحْرَقُوا عَسْكَرَهُ، ( فَضَعُفَ هُوَ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ )، فَأَمَرَ بِالْمَسِيرِ إِلَى بَابِ الْخَلِيفَةِ. وَنَزَلَ بُفْرَاجُ بِالْبَصْرَةِ، فَسَارَ سَعِيدٌ عَنِ الْبَصْرَةِ، وَأَقَامَ بِهَا بُفْرَاجُ يَحْمِي أَهْلَهَا، فَرَدَّ السُّلْطَانُ أَمْرَهَا إِلَى مَنْصُورِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْخَيَّاطِ، بَعْدَ سَعِيدٍ الْحَاجِبِ، وَكَانَ مَنْصُورٌ يُبَذْرِقُ السُّفُنَ، وَيَحْمِيَهَا، وَسَيَّرَهَا إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ، فَضَاقَتِ الْمِيرَةُ عَلَى الزَّنْجِ، فَجَمَعَ مَنْصُورٌ الشَّذَا فَأَكْثَرَ مِنْهَا، وَسَارَ نَحْوَ صَاحِبِ الزَّنْجِ، فَكَمَنَ لَهُ صَاحِبُ الزَّنْجِ، فَلَمَّا أَقْبَلْ خَرَجُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَقَتَلُوا فِي أَصْحَابِهِ مَقْتَلَهً عَظِيمَةً، وَغَرِقَ مِنْهُمْ خَلْقٌ كَثِيرٌ، وَحَمَلُوا مِنْ رُءُوسِ أَصْحَابِهِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَانِيِّ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ مِنَ الزُّنُوجِ بِنَهْرِ مَعْقِلٍ.
Translation
✧ The Defeat of Saʿīd by the Zanj and the Appointment of Manṣūr b. Jaʿfar over al-Baṣrah In this year, the ʿAlawī, the leader of the Zanj, fell upon Saʿīd, who was sending an army against him. They attacked him at night and inflicted a slaughter upon Saʿīd's companions, killing a great many and burning his camp, so that he and those with him were weakened. He then ordered a march to the caliph's gate. Būfrāj encamped at al-Baṣrah, and Saʿīd departed from al-Baṣrah. Būfrāj remained there protecting its people. The sultan then returned the command of it to Manṣūr b. Jaʿfar al-Khayyāṭ, after Saʿīd al-Ḥājib. Manṣūr used to escort the ships and protect them, and he sent them on to al-Baṣrah. Thus supplies became scarce for the Zanj. Manṣūr gathered the shadhā vessels and increased their number, and marched toward the leader of the Zanj. The leader of the Zanj lay in ambush for him, and when he approached they came out against him, killing a great slaughter among his companions, and a great many of them were drowned. They carried the heads of his companions to al-Baḥrānī and those with him of the Zanj at the canal of Maʿqil.
