Translation
✧ The arrival of Mūsā b. Bughā in Sāmarrā and the hiding of Ṣāliḥ In the year two hundred and fifty-six, on the twelfth of al-Muḥarram, Mūsā b. Bughā entered Sāmarrā, having arrayed his companions, and Ṣāliḥ b. Waṣīf went into hiding. Mūsā proceeded to al-Jawsaq, while al-Muhtadī was sitting in judgment for grievances. He was informed of Mūsā’s location, so he withheld permission for him for a while, then granted permission to him and those with him. They entered, debated, made al-Muhtadī rise from his seat, mounted him on a mount of the Shākiriyya mounts, and plundered what was in al-Jawsaq, then brought al-Muhtadī into the house of Yājūr. The reason for his seizure was that one of them said: “The cause of this prolongation is a trick against you, until Ṣāliḥ falls upon you with his army.” So they feared that, and they seized him. When they seized him, he said to Mūsā b. Bughā: “Fear God! Woe unto you, for you have committed a grave matter.” Mūsā said to him: “By the dust of al-Mutawakkil, we intend only good.” If he had intended good by it, he would have said “By the dust of al-Muʿtaṣim and al-Wāthiq.” Then they took pledges from him that he would not incline to Ṣāliḥ, nor harbor for them anything but what he showed. Then they renewed the oath of allegiance to him. Then they arose in the morning and sent to Ṣāliḥ that he should come so that they might demand from him the blood of the secretaries, the wealth belonging to al-Muʿtazz, and his spoils. He promised them that he would come to them. Then he gathered with a group of commanders from his companions and began preparing to assemble armies against them. Then he hid from that night, and no one knew where he went at that hour. They sent criers to call out about him in the quarters of the city and to threaten anyone who concealed him, and he remained in hiding until the end of Ṣafar.
