✧ Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir's Governorship of Baghdādh, and the Disturbance of the Troops and the Common People There In Ramaḍān of the year two hundred fifty-five, a disturbance also occurred in Baghdādh between Muḥammad b. Aws and those who followed him from the shākiriyya, the troops, and others, and the common people and the rabble. The reason for that was that Muḥammad b. Aws had arrived from Khurāsān with Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir in command of the troops coming from Khurāsān, and over the ṣaʿālīk who were with them, whose names were not in the dīwān of Iraq. It was the custom that those coming from Khurāsān to Iraq be given what they had in Khurāsān, and that this come from the income of the estates of the heirs of Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn, and a letter be written to Khurāsān so that the heirs be given its equivalent from the public treasury. When ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh heard of Salmān's arrival in Iraq and that authority would pass to him, he took what was in the heirs' treasury and took installments that were not yet due, and departed. He stayed at al-Juwayb, on the eastern side of the Tigris, then moved to its western side. Sulaymān arrived and found the heirs' treasury empty, so the world became constrained for him, and he gave his companions from the funds of the troops of Baghdādh, and the troops and the shākiriyya stirred in demanding their stipends. Those who had come with Muḥammad b. Aws from Khurāsān had behaved badly toward the people of Baghdādh as neighbors, openly committed indecencies, and assaulted women and boys by force, so the people became filled with rage and anger toward them. The common people joined with the troops and rose up. They came to the prison of Baghdādh at Bāb al-Shām, broke its gate, and released those inside. A battle took place between the newcomers with Ibn Aws and the people of Baghdādh. Ibn Aws and his companions and his sons crossed over to the island, and the people shouted to one another: 'Whoever wants to plunder, let him join us!' It is said that more than a hundred thousand souls from the common people crossed to the island. The troops came to them bearing weapons, and Ibn Aws fled to his house, but the people followed him, and they fought fiercely for half a day. Ibn Aws was wounded, and he and his companions were routed; the people pursued them until they drove them out of Bāb al-Shammāsiyya. They plundered his house and everything in it; it is said its value was two thousand dirhams, and they took from him goods beyond count. The people of Baghdādh plundered the houses of the ṣaʿālīk among his companions. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh sent to Ibn Aws ordering him to depart for Khurāsān, informing him that he had no way to return to Baghdādh. He set out for al-Nahrawān, where he plundered and caused destruction, then came to Bāyikbāk al-Turkī. The governors along the Khurāsān road wrote to him in Dhū al-Qaʿda. Musāwir b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd had appointed as his deputy a man named Mūsā at al-Daskara and its environs, with three hundred men, to whom was entrusted the district between Ḥulwān and al-Sūs along the Khurāsān road and Baṭn Jūkhā. Ibn al-Rūmī said, regarding Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh's governorship of Baghdādh: Who will excuse me from the creatures who have strayed In Sulaymān from the even path? ( They recompensed him after the defeat with Baghdādh, As if he had achieved a mighty conquest. Who plunges into destruction when the one who fled They reward with a fine recompense? )
