Translation

✧ Musāwir’s seizure of al-Mawṣil When the army of al-Mawṣil fled before Musāwir the Khārijite, as we have mentioned, his affair grew strong and his followers increased. He marched from his position and made for al-Mawṣil, encamping outside it near al-Dayr al-Aʿlā. The amir of the town, ʿAbd Allāh b. Sulaymān, went into hiding from him because of his inability to fight him, and the people of al-Mawṣil likewise did not repel him (being inclined to dissent). Musāwir sent a party to the house of ʿAbd Allāh, the amir of the town, and they burned it. Musāwir entered al-Mawṣil without battle, harming no one. Friday arrived, so he entered the congregational mosque, and the people—or those of them who attended—were present. He ascended the minbar and preached from it, saying in his sermon: “O God, set us aright and set our rulers aright!” When he began the prayer, he placed his thumbs in his ears and then pronounced six takbīrs, then recited after that. When he preached, he stationed on the steps of the minbar some of his companions to guard him with swords, and likewise during the prayer, because he feared the people of al-Mawṣil. Then he departed from al-Mawṣil and did not venture to remain there because of its large population. He marched to al-Ḥadītha, for he had made it his abode of emigration.
