Translation
✧ The distrubance in Baghdad. At the end of the last day of Rajab of this year, a terrible fitna occurred in Baghdad. The common people rose against its governor Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir and called for the pledge of allegiance to Abū Aḥmad b. al-Mutawakkil, the brother of al-Muʿtazz. The reason was that al-Muhtadī's letter arrived at the end of Rajab to Sulaymān, ordering him to take the pledge of allegiance for him. Abū Aḥmad b. al-Mutawakkil was in Baghdad, and al-Muʿtazz had sent him there, as previously mentioned. So Sulaymān sent for him and took him to his house. Those in Baghdad among the troops and the common people heard of al-Muʿtazz's affair, so they gathered at the gate of Sulaymān's house. His companions fought them, and they were told: "No news reaches us from Sāmarrā." So they dispersed. They returned the next day, which was Friday, for the same purpose. The sermon was delivered for al-Muʿtazz in Baghdad, so they dispersed. They came early on Saturday and stormed Sulaymān's house, called out the name of Abū Aḥmad, and called for his pledge of allegiance. They asked Sulaymān to show them Abū Aḥmad, so he presented him to them. He promised them that he would accede to their wishes if what they desired was delayed. They departed after emphasizing to him the protection of Abū Aḥmad. Then money was sent to them from Sāmarrā and distributed among them. They were satisfied and pledged allegiance to al-Muhtadī on the seventh day of Shaʿbān, and the fitna subsided.
