Al-Muʿtazz rode out at night while Bughā was occupied with marrying his daughter to Ṣāliḥ b. Yūsuf. Bughā seized the sultan's wealth and the wealth of his mother, and loaded twenty mules with it. They fell upon him and killed him, and brought his head to al-Muʿtazz, who displayed it in Sāmarrāʾ and gave the one who brought his head ten thousand dinars. Then he sent the head down to the City of Peace (Baghdad), ordered his body to be burned, imprisoned a group of his children, and exiled five of his young ones to ʿUmān and al-Baḥrayn. Yūnus b. Because of his residence in al-ʿAskar, he became known as Abū al-Ḥasan al-ʿAskarī. Abū Aḥmad b. al-Mutawakkil prayed over him. From al-Ḥusayn b. Yaḥyā, who said: Al-Mutawakkil fell ill at the beginning of his caliphate and said, "If I recover, I will give many dinars in charity." When he recovered, he gathered the jurists and asked them about that, and they differed. He sent to ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Mūsā, who said: "Give eighty-three dinars in charity." Some people were amazed at that, and some were prejudiced against him, saying, "Ask him, O Commander of the Faithful, where he got this." So he sent the messenger back to him. He said: "Tell the Commander of the Faithful: In this is the fulfillment of the vow, because Allah the Exalted said: 'Allah has already helped you on many battlefields' [9:25]. Our people all narrated that the battlefields in the expeditions, raids, and campaigns were eighty-three, and the day of Ḥunayn was the eighty-fourth. He was trustworthy, good, and righteous. From Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl, who said: I heard Muḥammad b. Manṣūr al-Ṭūsī with a group around him saying to him: "O Abū Jaʿfar, what is today according to you? People are in doubt about it: is it the Day of ʿArafah or not?" He said: "Wait." He entered the house and then came out and said: "According to me, it is the Day of ʿArafah." They were too shy to ask him, "Where did you get that?" They counted the days and nights, and the day that Muḥammad b. Manṣūr said was indeed the Day of ʿArafah. Abū al-ʿAbbās said: [I was the youngest of the group], and Abū Bakr b. Sallām al-Warrāq came to him with a group, and I heard Ibn Sallām say: "How did you know that it is the Day of ʿArafah?" He said: "I entered the house and asked my Lord, the Exalted, and He showed me the people at the standing place (al-mawqif)." Al-Ṭūsī died on Friday, six nights remaining of Shawwāl of this year, at the age of eighty-eight. 1565 Al-Muʾammal b. Ihāb b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Rabaʿī al-Muʾammal b. Ihāb b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Rabaʿī. Kufan. He came to Baghdad and related there from Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, Yazīd b. Hārūn, ʿAbd al-Razzāq, and others. From him narrated Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, al-Nasāʾī, and al-Bāghandī. He was truthful. He has a story with the hadith scholars. From ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, who said: Al-Muʾammal b. Ihāb arrived in al-Ramlah, and the hadith scholars gathered around him. He was timid and resistant, and they insisted, but he refused to narrate to them. So they all went away and formed themselves into two factions. They went to the judge and said: "We have a slave of mixed race (khilāsī) who has a right of companionship and upbringing over us. He had taught us and excelled in teaching, and our situation has led us to hardship in carrying the inkwell [for seeking hadith, and we] have wanted to sell him, but he refused us." The sultan said to them: "How do I know the truth of what you have mentioned?" They said: "With us at the door is a group of the masters, seekers of knowledge, and trustworthy people. We can suffice by looking at them without asking about them, and they know this, so permit them to enter [to you] so that you may hear from them." He brought them in and heard their statement, and he sent behind al-Muʾammal with the police and assistants, summoning him to the sultan. He resisted, and they pulled and dragged him. When he entered upon him, he said to him: "Is it not enough for you what you are in of runaway behavior, until you resist the sultan? Take him to prison." Al-Muʾammal was imprisoned. His appearance was that he was yellow, tall, with a light beard, resembling the slaves of [the people of] the Ḥijāz. He remained in prison for days until a group of his brothers learned of it and went to the sultan and said: "This Muʾammal b. Ihāb is in your prison, wronged." He said to them: "Who wronged him?" They said: "You." He said: "I know nothing of this. Who is this Muʾammal?" They said: "The shaykh around whom the group gathered." He said: "That runaway slave?" They said: "He is not a runaway slave; rather he is an imam among the imams of the Muslims in hadith." He ordered his release and asked him about his condition, and sent him away, and asked him to absolve him (make him lawful). After that, al-Muʾammal was not seen resisting as he had resisted before, until he joined Allah the Exalted. Al-Muʾammal died in al-Ramlah in Rajab of this year. Among the notable people who died in it: Ziyād b. Yaḥyā al-Ḥassānī. Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī al-Hādī As for Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī al-Hādī. He is the son of Muḥammad al-Jawād b. ʿAlī al-Riḍā b. Mūsā al-Kāẓim b. Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq b. Muḥammad al-Bāqir b. ʿAlī Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn b. al-Ḥusayn al-Shahīd b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, one of the Twelve Imams. He is the father of al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī al-ʿAskarī, the awaited one according to the misguided, ignorant, lying, erring sect. He was a devoted worshipper and ascetic. Al-Mutawakkil had him brought to Sāmarrāʾ, and he resided there for more than twenty years and some months, and died there in this year. It was mentioned to al-Mutawakkil that in his house there were weapons and many books from the people, so he sent and raided him. They found him sitting facing the qiblah, wearing a woolen garment, on the bare ground with nothing between him and it. They took him as he was and carried him to al-Mutawakkil while he was at his drink. When he stood before him, he honored and magnified him, seated him beside him, and handed him the cup that was in his hand. He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, it has never mixed with my flesh and blood, so excuse me from it." He excused him. Then he said to him: "Recite some poetry to me." He recited: They spent the night on the mountain peaks, guarded by Mighty men, but the peaks availed them not. They were brought down after glory from their strongholds, And placed in pits—what an evil descent! A crier called to them after they were buried: Where are the couches, the crowns, and the fine garments? Where are the faces that were once pampered, Before which curtains and canopies were hung? The grave answered clearly when it was asked about them: Those faces—upon them worms now fight. Long did they eat and drink for an age, And after long eating, they themselves were eaten. He said: Al-Mutawakkil wept until the ground was wet, and those around him in his presence wept. He ordered the drink to be removed, ordered four thousand dinars for him, and returned him to his house honored—may Allah have mercy on him. (In this year also died Abū al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Qaṭan al-Naḥwī al-Qayrawānī there. He was an imam in grammar and lexicography, and an imam in Arabic. It is said: He died in the year two hundred and fifty-five [AH], and that is more correct.)
