Translation

✧ The beginning of the affair of Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn The lands of Egypt had been granted as a fief to Bāyikbāk, one of the chief Turkish commanders. He resided at the capital and appointed a deputy to act on his behalf in Egypt. Ṭūlūn, the father of Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, was also one of the Turks, and Aḥmad grew up after his father upon an upright path and a good manner of conduct. Bāyikbāk sought someone to act as his deputy in Egypt, and Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn was recommended to him because of the good conduct that had become apparent from him. So he appointed him and dispatched him there. At that time Ibn al-Mudabbir was in charge of the land tax in Egypt, and he had acted despotically in the country. When Aḥmad arrived, he restrained Ibn al-Mudabbir, seized control of the country, and Bāyikbāk had appointed Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn over Egypt alone, to the exclusion of the rest of the provinces such as Alexandria and others. Then when al-Muhtadī killed Bāyikbāk and Egypt passed to Yārkūj al-Turkī, and between him and Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn there was a firm bond of friendship, he appointed Aḥmad over all the lands of Egypt. Thus his authority became strong, his standing rose high, and his days endured. That is the bounty of God which He gives to whom He wills, and God is the possessor of great bounty. He is the builder of the famous mosque there.
