✧ The Killing of Bughā al-Sharābī In the year four and fifty and two hundred, the Caliph al-Muʿtazz commanded the killing of Bughā al-Sharābī. The reason for his killing was that he was inciting al-Muʿtazz to go to Baghdad, while al-Muʿtazz refused that and disliked it. It happened that Bughā was occupied with giving his daughter in marriage to Ṣāliḥ b. Waṣīf, so al-Muʿtazz rode, and with him Aḥmad b. Isrāʾīl, to Karkh Sāmarrā, to Bāykubāk al-Turkī and those with him who were alienated from Bughā. The reason for his alienation from him was that the two of them were sharing a drink, and one of them behaved badly toward the other, so Bāykubāk hid from Bughā. When al-Muʿtazz came to him, the people of al-Karkh and the people of al-Dūr gathered with him, then they set out with al-Muʿtazz to al-Jawsaq in Sāmarrā. That reached Bughā, so he went out with his ghilmān, and they were about five hundred persons from his sons and commanders. He traveled to al-Sinn, and his companions complained to one another about the harshness they were in, and that they had gone out without tents or what they might wear in the cold, and that they were in winter. Some of his companions came to him and informed him of their words, so he said: "Leave me so that I may consider tonight." When night fell upon him, he rode in a small boat, and with him were two servants and some of the money that had accompanied him. He had with him nineteen purses of dinars and one hundred purses of dirhams, and he carried no weapon with him, nor a knife, nor anything, and no one in his army knew of him. During Bughā's absence, al-Muʿtazz did not sleep except in his clothes with weapons upon him. Bughā traveled to the bridge in the first third of the night, and those entrusted with the bridge sent to see who he was. He shouted at the ghulām, so he returned, and Bughā went out into the Khāqānī garden. A number of those entrusted caught up with him, so Bughā stopped for them and said: "I am Bughā. Either you go with me to Ṣāliḥ b. Waṣīf, or you come with me so that I may treat you well." Some of them took charge of him, and they sent the news to al-Muʿtazz, who commanded his killing, so he was killed. His head was carried to al-Muʿtazz and was displayed in Sāmarrā and in Baghdādh, and the Maghāriba burned his body. He had intended to hide with Ṣāliḥ b. Waṣīf, and when the people were occupied with the festival, which was near, he and Ṣāliḥ would go out and leap upon al-Muʿtazz.
