Saʿīd al-Jawharī about a ḥadīth of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq [ ؓ ], and he said to his slave-girl: Bring out to me the twenty-third part of the "Musnad of Abū Bakr." I said to him: Not even fifty ḥadīths are sound from Abū Bakr, so from where come twenty-three parts? He said: Every ḥadīth for which I do not have a hundred chains—in it I am an orphan. It is related from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Firyābī, who said: I heard Ibrāhīm al-Harawī say: Saʿīd al-Jawharī performed the pilgrimage, and he took with him four hundred men of the visitors, besides his retinue, performing the pilgrimage with them! Among them were Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh and Hushaym b. Bashīr, and I was with them during the reign of [Hārūn] al-Rashīd. He reported ḥadīth from Hushaym, Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, ʿAlī b. Ghurāb, Yaḥyā b. Yamān, Yazīd b. Hārūn, and others. From him narrated his nephew al-Junayd b. A slave-girl passed by him whose vessel, in which she was buying something for her masters, had broken, and she began to weep. So Sarī gave her something with which to buy a replacement. Maʿrūf looked at him and at what he had done for that slave-girl, and said to him: May God make the world hateful to you. Sarī said: I passed by on a feast day, and behold, Maʿrūf was with a small boy in disheveled condition. I said: What is this? He said: This boy was standing while the children were playing, and he was broken-hearted. I said to him: What is the matter with you that you do not play? He said: I am an orphan, and I have nothing with which to buy nuts to play with. So I took him to collect date-stones for him with which he could buy nuts and be happy. I said: Shall I clothe him and give him something with which to buy nuts? He said: Will you do it? I said: Yes. He said: Take him; may God enrich your heart. He said: Then the world became in my sight the least of things. Once he had almonds, and a man bargained with him over a kurr for sixty-three dinars. Then the man went away, and behold, a kurr of almonds was worth ninety dinars. So he said to him: I will buy the kurr from you for ninety dinars. He said: I bargained with you for sixty-three, and I will not sell it except for that. The man said: And I will buy from you for ninety. He said: I will not sell it except for what I bargained with you. The man said: It is part of sincere counsel that I should not buy from you except for ninety dinars. And he went away and did not buy from him. One day a woman came to Sarī and said: My son has been taken by the guards, and I would like you to send to the chief of police so that he not be beaten. So he stood up, said the takbīr, and prolonged the prayer, while the woman burned within herself. When he finished the prayer, the woman said: God, God, for my child! He said: Here I am, for your need. He had not risen from his seat before a woman came to that woman and said: Rejoice, for the governor has released your son. So she went back to him. Sarī said: I desire to eat a meal in which there is no liability owed to God upon me and no favor owed to anyone upon me, but I find no way to that. In another narration he said: For thirty years I have desired greens, but I have not been able to obtain them. From al-Sarī it is related that he said: Our market burned, and I headed to the place where my shop was. A man met me and said: Rejoice, for your shop has been saved. I said: Praise be to God. Then I remembered that praise, and I have been seeking God's forgiveness for thirty years. Al-Khaṭīb related it. Al-Sarī said: One night I prayed my portion of litanies, then I stretched out my leg in the miḥrāb. It was called out: O Sarī, is this how you sit in the company of kings? He said: I drew in my leg, then I said: By Your might, I shall never stretch out my leg again. He was one of the devoted worshipers. It is related from Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. ʿĀmir, who said: I heard Ḥasan al-Musūḥī say: Al-Sarī handed me a coin and said: Buy me fava beans [and do not buy except from] a man whose pot is inside the door. So I went around all of al-Karkh, and I found none but those whose pot was outside the door. I returned to him and said: Take your coin; I find none but those whose pot is outside the door. It is related from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan al-Ṭufaylī, who said: I heard al-Firjānī say]: I heard al-Junayd say: I have never seen anyone more devoted to worship than al-Sarī al-Saqaṭī. He reached ninety-eight years, and he was never seen lying down except in his fatal illness. It is related from Jaʿfar al-Khālidī in his book, who said: I heard al-Junayd say: One day I was with al-Sarī b. al-Mughallis, and we were alone, and he was wrapped in a waist-cloth. I looked at his body, and it was like the body of an ailing, wasted, emaciated man, as exhausted as could be. He said: Look at this body of mine; if I wished to say that what is in me is from love, it would be as I say. His face was yellow, then it became suffused with redness until it flushed rose, then he fell ill. I entered upon him to visit him and said: How do you find yourself? He said: How can I complain to my physician of what is in me, when what is in me came upon me from my physician? So I took the fan to fan him, and he said: How can he who is burning from within feel the breeze of the fan? Then he began to recite: The heart is burning, and tears are racing; and grief is gathered, and patience is scattered. How can there be rest for one who has no rest, from what passion, longing, and agitation have wrought? O Lord, if there is anything in which I have relief, then bestow it upon me as long as I have breath. Al-Khaṭīb mentioned that he died on Tuesday, six nights remaining in Ramaḍān of the year two hundred and fifty-three, after the call to dawn prayer, and he was buried after the afternoon prayer. He said: He was buried in the cemetery of al-Shūnīzīyyah, and his grave is visible and known, and beside it is the grave of al-Junayd. It is related from al-Qāḍī, from Abū ʿUbayd b. Ḥarbawayh, who said: I saw Sarī in a dream, and I said: What did God do with you? He said: He forgave me and everyone who attended my funeral. I said: I was among those who attended your funeral and prayed over you. He said: Then he brought out a scroll and looked in it, and he did not see my name in it. I said: Yes, I attended. And there was my name in the margin. Ibn Khillikān related a saying that Sarī died in the year two hundred and fifty-one. And it is said: in the year two hundred and fifty-six. But God knows best. Ibn Khillikān said: Among what al-Sarī used to recite, may God have mercy on him, is: When I complain of love, she says: You have lied to me; so why do I see your limbs still clothed? There is no love until the skin clings to the entrails, and you become so bewildered that you do not answer the caller. ʿAlī b. Shuʿayb b. ʿAdī b. Hammām, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Simsār ʿAlī b.
