Translation
✧ Account of several events In the year two hundred and fifty-three, Abū Aḥmad b. al-Mutawakkil was banished to al-Baṣrah, then returned to Baghdād, and he was lodged on the eastern side in Qaṣr Dīnār. ʿAlī b. al-Muʿtaṣim was also banished to Wāsiṭ, then returned to Baghdād. In it, Muzāḥim b. Khāqān died in Egypt in Dhū al-Ḥijjah. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Zaynabī led the people in the pilgrimage. In it, Muḥammad b. Muʿādh raided from the direction of Malaṭyah, and he was defeated and taken captive. In it, Mūsā b. Bughā and al-Kawkabī al-ʿAlawī met near Qazwīn, and al-Kawkabī was defeated and rejoined al-Daylam. The cause of the defeat was that when they drew up in ranks for battle, al-Kawkabī’s companions placed their shields before their faces, shielding themselves with them from the arrows of Mūsā’s companions. When Mūsā saw that his companions’ arrows were not reaching them because of their action, he ordered that the naphtha he had be poured on the ground. Then he ordered his companions to feign retreat before them, and they did so. Al-Kawkabī and his companions thought that they had been routed, so they pursued them. When they reached the middle of the naphtha, Mūsā ordered fire, and it was cast into it, and it blazed up from beneath their feet and began to burn them, so they fled, and Mūsā pursued them and entered Qazwīn. In it, in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, Musāwir the Khārijite encountered an army of the caliph, their commander being Ḥuṭurmus, in the district of Jalūlāʾ, and Musāwir defeated him. In it, the Muslim army marched from al-Andalus to the lands of the polytheists, and they conquered the fortresses of Jirnīq, and besieged Fawth, and overcame most of its walls. In Ramaḍān of that year, al-Muʿtazz bestowed robes of honor on Bughā al-Sharābī and dressed him in the crown and the two sashes. In it, ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Zaynabī led the people in the pilgrimage. In it, Ibn Abī al-ʿAnbas was appointed judge over the City of Peace, and Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Samāʿah was dismissed. According to Ṭalḥah b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, he said: Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Samāʿah was dismissed, and Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq b. Abī al-ʿAnbas was appointed judge in his place in this year. He had been holding the judgeship of al-Kūfah. This was a man of great standing and good religion. The cause of his dismissal was that al-Muwaffaq wanted him to hand over to him the orphans’ funds by way of a loan, but he refused to hand them over to him and said: “No, by God, not even a grain of them.” So he dismissed him from the judiciary, and he was returned to the judgeship of al-Kūfah. It is said that this was in the year two hundred and fifty-four.
