✧ The Conflict between the Troops of Baghdad and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh In the year two hundred and fifty-two AH (866 CE), there was a battle between the troops of Baghdad and the supporters of Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. The reason for that was that the Shākiriyya and the men on the payroll gathered at Muḥammad's residence demanding their stipends in Ramaḍān. He told them: "I have written to the Commander of the Faithful about releasing your stipends. He wrote back: 'If you want the troops for yourself, then give them their stipends; but if you want them for us, then we have no need of them.'" So they rioted against him. He brought out two thousand dinars, which were distributed among them, and they quieted down. Then they gathered again in Ramaḍān, with standards and drums, and pitched tents at Bāb Ḥarb, at Bāb al-Shammāsiyya, and elsewhere, and built huts of reed mats and canes. They spent the night there. When morning came, their numbers had grown large. Muḥammad summoned his supporters and they spent the night in his residence, and he filled his residence with men. A great crowd of those rioters gathered at Bāb Ḥarb with weapons, standards, and drums. Their leader was Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbdūn b. al-Muwaffaq, who was one of the deputies of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Yaḥyā b. Khāqān. He urged them to demand their stipends and what was owed to them. When Friday came, they intended to prevent the preacher from praying for al-Muʿtazz. The preacher learned of that, so he excused himself on account of an illness that had befallen him and did not deliver the sermon. They then proceeded toward the bridge. Ibn Ṭāhir sent against them several of his commanders with a group of horsemen and infantry. They fought, and some were killed among them. They drove Ibn Ṭāhir's men from the bridge. When those on the eastern side saw that their comrades had dislodged Ibn Ṭāhir's men from the bridge, they charged forward, intending to cross over to their comrades. Ibn Ṭāhir had prepared a boat filled with thorns and reeds, set it on fire, and sent it against the upper bridge. It burned its boats and cut it, then reached the other bridge, where the people of the western side caught it and sank it. Those on the eastern side crossed to the western side and drove Ibn Ṭāhir's men back to the gate of his residence. About ten people were killed among them, and the common people looted the police station, taking from it a great amount of various goods. When Ibn Ṭāhir saw that the troops had prevailed over his men, he ordered the shops at the bridge to be burned. A great deal of merchants' goods were burned, and the fire separated the two sides. The troops returned to their camp at Bāb Ḥarb. Ibn Ṭāhir gathered all his supporters and arrayed them in battle order, fearing the troops might return. But they did not come back. Then one day two men from the troops came to him and showed him the weak point of the group. He ordered that they be given two hundred dinars. He commanded Shāh b. Mīkāl and other commanders, with a group, to march against them. They marched to that area. Abū al-Qāsim and Ibn al-Khalīl, who were the two leaders of the troops, had become afraid because of the departure of those two men, and the people had dispersed from them. So each of them went off in a different direction. As for Ibn al-Khalīl, he encountered Shāh b. Mīkāl and those with him. They shouted at him, and Muḥammad's men shouted at him. He fell into their midst and was killed. As for Abū al-Qāsim, he went into hiding, but was pointed out, seized, and carried to Ibn Ṭāhir. The troops dispersed from Bāb Ḥarb and returned to their homes. Abū al-Qāsim was put in chains and beaten severely, and he died from that in Ramaḍān.
