Translation

✧ The killing of al-Mustaʿīn in Shawwāl of the year two hundred and fifty-two. Al-Muʿtazz wrote to his deputy Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir ordering him to equip an army against al-Mustaʿīn. He equipped Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn al-Turkī, who overtook him and brought him out with six nights remaining of Ramaḍān. He arrived with him at al-Qāṭūl after three nights had passed of Shawwāl, then he was killed. Ibn Jarīr mentioned that al-Mustaʿīn asked Saʿīd b. Ṣāliḥ al-Turkī, when he intended to kill him, to grant him respite until he prayed two rakʿahs. He granted him respite. When he was in the final prostration, he killed him while he was prostrating, and buried his body in the place of his prayer, and effaced its trace. It was said: rather, he placed a stone on his leg and threw him into the Tigris. It was said: he had brought with him a wet nurse of his who accompanied him. When Saʿīd seized him, he struck him with the sword, and he cried out, and his wet nurse cried out, then he was killed and the woman was killed with him. His head was carried to al-Muʿtazz while he was playing chess. It was said: this is the head of the deposed one! He said: put it aside until I finish the match. When he finished, he looked at it, ordered its burial, and ordered for Saʿīd fifty thousand dirhams, and appointed him to the police of al-Baṣrah. From Abū Bakr b. Abī al-Dunyā, he said: al-Mustaʿīn was killed at a place called al-Qādisiyyah on the road to Sāmarrāʾ in Shawwāl of the year two hundred and fifty-two. Some of them say: he was killed when his age was twenty-four years.
