Translation
✧ Mention of several events. In the year 251 AH, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, there appeared a man from the Ahl al-Bayt also in the land of Qazwīn and Zanjān, namely al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Arqaṭ b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, known as al-Kawkabī. In it, Ismāʿīl b. Yūsuf al-ʿAlawī rose, and he was the son of the sister of Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥasanī. In it, there also rose in al-Kūfah a man from the Ṭālibiyyīn, namely al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad b. Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. Al-Mustaʿīn sent Muzāḥim b. Khāqān against him, and they fought, and the ʿAlawī was defeated, and many of his companions were killed. When Muzāḥim entered al-Kūfah, he burned a thousand houses there, plundered the wealth of those who had gone out with him, and sold some of the slave women of al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad—though she had been freed—at the gate of the congregational mosque. In it, Ismāʿīl b. Yūsuf b. Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib appeared in Makkah. Its governor Jaʿfar b. al-Faḍl b. ʿĪsā b. Mūsā fled from him. Ismāʿīl b. Yūsuf plundered his residence and the residences of his companions, killed a group of soldiers and others from the people of Makkah, and took what was in the Kaʿbah of gold, silver, perfume, and the covering of the Kaʿbah. He took from the people about two hundred thousand dinars. Then he went out to the Prophetic Madinah, and its governor ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl fled from him. Then Ismāʿīl b. Yūsuf returned to Makkah in Rajab and besieged its people until they perished from hunger and thirst. Bread was sold at three ounces for a dirham, meat at a pound for four, and a drink of water for three dirhams. The people of Makkah suffered every trial from him. Then he departed from them to Jiddah after a stay of fifty-seven days, and plundered the merchants' wealth there, seized the ships, and cut off provisions from the people of Makkah until they were brought from Yemen. Then he returned to Makkah—may Allah not reward him with good on behalf of the Muslims. On the Day of ʿArafah, he did not allow the people to stand, neither by day nor by night, and he killed one thousand one hundred of the pilgrims and stripped them of their wealth. None stood at ʿArafah that year except him and those with him of his companions—may Allah not accept from them any turn or justice. In this year Sulaymān b. Muḥammad returned, whom ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir had dispatched to Ṭabaristān from Jurjān with a large force, cavalry, and weapons. Al-Ḥasan b. Zayd withdrew from Ṭabaristān and joined al-Daylam. Sulaymān entered it and headed to Sāriyah. Two sons of Laqāran b. Shahryār came to him, and the people of Āmul and others came to him, repenting, showing remorse, asking for pardon. He met them as they wished, and forbade his companions from killing, plundering, and harming. A letter came from Asad b. Jandān to Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh informing him that he had met ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṭālibī, called al-Muraʿashshī, with those with him of the leaders of the mountain, and defeated him and entered the city of Āmul. In it, two men appeared in Armenia. Al-ʿAlāʾ b. Aḥmad, the governor of Bughā al-Sharābī, fought them and defeated them. They ascended a fortress there, and he besieged them and set up mangonels against it, and they were driven from it, and their affair was concealed from him, and he took possession of the fortress. In it, ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh fought al-Muwaffaq al-Khārijī and defeated him, and al-Muwaffaq was taken prisoner. In it, a letter came from Muḥammad b. Ṭāhir b. ʿAbd Allāh informing about the Ṭālibī who appeared in al-Rayy, and the armies he had prepared and sent against him, and that he had captured him. His name was Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, and he took him prisoner. Then he marched to al-Rayy after the capture of Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā b. al-Ḥusayn al-Ṣaghīr b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, upon him be peace, and Idrīs b. Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, upon him be peace. In it, al-Ḥasan b. Zayd was defeated by Muḥammad b. Ṭāhir, having met him with thirty thousand, and three hundred forty men of the notables of al-Ḥasan's companions were killed. In it, there was a battle between Muḥammad b. Khālid b. Yazīd, Aḥmad al-Muwallad, and Ayyūb b. Aḥmad at al-Sukayr in the land of Banū Taghlib, and a large group was killed among them. Muḥammad was defeated and his baggage was plundered. In it, Balkājūr raided the Byzantines, and he conquered Maṭmūrah, gained abundant booty, and took a group of Byzantines captive. In it, an ʿAlawī person appeared in the region of Nineveh in the land of Iraq. Hishām b. Abī Dulaf met him in the month of Ramadan, killed a group of the ʿAlawī's companions, and he fled and entered al-Kūfah. In it, Banū ʿAqīl cut off the road to Jiddah. Jaʿfar (Bishāshāt) fought them, and about three hundred men of the people of Makkah were killed. Prices rose in Makkah, and the Bedouins raided the villages.
