✧ The campaign against the Franks in al-Andalus In the year 251 AH, Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī, ruler of al-Andalus, dispatched an army with his son al-Mundhir to the land of the polytheists in Jumādā al-Ākhirah. They marched and made for al-Milāḥah. There was wealth belonging to Dhurayq in the region of Ulbah and al-Qilāʿ. When the Muslims had spread ruin and plunder throughout their land, Dhurayq gathered his forces and marched against them. They met at a place called Fajj al-Markuwayn, by which this campaign is known. They fought, and the polytheists were defeated, but they did not flee far; they regrouped on a hill near the battlefield. The Muslims pursued them and charged them, and the fighting intensified. The Franks turned and fled, not stopping for anything. The Muslims pursued them, killing and taking captives. This battle took place on the twelfth of Rajab. The number of heads taken from the polytheists was two thousand four hundred and ninety-two. It was a great victory, and the Muslims returned.
