Translation
✧ Mention of several events In the year two hundred and forty-nine, ʿAlī b. al-Jahm b. Badr the poet was killed near Aleppo. He had set out for the frontier, and cavalry belonging to Kalb met him; they killed him and took what he had with him. While in the throes of death he said: Does the night increase with night, or did a torrent flow into the dawn? I remembered the people of Dujayl, and how far Dujayl is from me. His dwelling was on the road of Dujayl. In it Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid was dismissed from the judiciary, and Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmmār al-Burjumī al-Kūfī was appointed to it. It is said: that was in the year two hundred and fifty. In it the people of al-Rayy were struck by a severe earthquake and a tremor by which houses collapsed, many of their people died, and the rest fled and encamped outside the city. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. Mūsā b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm the Imām led the people in pilgrimage this year, and he was governor of Makkah. In it Muḥammad, ruler of al-Andalus, dispatched an army with his son to the city of Alba and the fortresses of the land of the Franks; the cavalry ranged through that frontier, took booty, and captured impregnable strongholds there. On Friday, with five nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ūlā, which is the sixteenth day of Tammūz, the people of Sāmarrāʾ were rained upon with a great rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, while the clouds were overcast and the rain poured down abundantly from the beginning of the day until the yellowing of the sun.
