✧ Those of the notables who died in the year two hundred and forty-nine: Ibrāhīm b. Muṭarrif b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Ḥumayd, Abū Isḥāq al-Istirābādhī Ibrāhīm b. Muṭarrif b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Ḥumayd, Abū Isḥāq al-Istirābādhī. He was among the major virtuous jurists and among the trustworthy scholars of ḥadīth. He heard from Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā al-Farrāʾ and others, and he was offered the position of judge during the Ẓāhirī days, but he refused to accept it [and rejected it] and returned to him a hundred dinars. He died in this year. Ibrāhīm b. ʿĪsā, Abū Isḥāq al-Aṣfahānī Ibrāhīm b. ʿĪsā, Abū Isḥāq al-Aṣfahānī. He kept company with Maʿrūf al-Karkhī, and his worship resembled the worship of the angels. One night he would stand until near dawn, then bow and complete it with two rakʿahs; one night he would bow until near dawn, then prostrate and complete it with two rakʿahs; one night he would prostrate until near dawn, then rise and complete it with two rakʿahs. Then at the end of the night he would supplicate for all people, and for all animals—beasts and wild creatures—and he would say regarding the Jews and Christians: "O Allah, guide them," and he would say regarding merchants: "O Allah, keep their trade safe." He died in [Shawwāl] of this year. Ūtāmish al-Turkī Ūtāmish al-Turkī [the emir] Al-Mustaʿīn placed him above everyone and made him his vizier, so he was envied for that, and he was killed in this year. Ḥumayd b. Hishām b. Ḥumayd, Abū Khalīfah al-Ruʿaynī Ḥumayd b. Hishām b. Ḥumayd, Abū Khalīfah al-Ruʿaynī: He narrated from al-Layth and Ibn Lahīʿah, and he lived a long life. His supplication was answered. He died in Shawwāl of this year. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣabbāḥ b. Muḥammad, Abū ʿAlī al-Bazzāz al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣabbāḥ b. Muḥammad, Abū ʿAlī al-Bazzāz: He heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Shabābah, and others. Al-Bukhārī, al-Ḥarbī, Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, al-Baghawī, Ibn Ṣāʿid narrated from him, and the last to narrate from him was al-Qāḍī al-Maḥāmilī. Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī said: "He is truthful." Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal used to raise his status and honor him. He was trustworthy and a follower of the Sunnah. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Sarrāj said: I heard al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣabbāḥ say: I was brought before al-Maʾmūn three times. The first time it was reported to him that I was commanding good—and he had forbidden anyone from commanding good—so I was seized and brought before him. He said to me: "Are you al-Ḥasan al-Bazzāz?" I said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "And you command good?" I said: "No, but I forbid evil." So he had me raised on a man's back and struck me five lashes, then released me. I was brought before him the second time; it was reported to him that I was reviling ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. When I stood before him he said to me: "Are you al-Ḥasan?" I said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "And you revile ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib?" I said: "May Allah bless my master and lord ʿAlī. O Commander of the Faithful, I do not revile Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah because he is your cousin, so how would I revile my master and lord?!" He said: "Release him." I went once to the land of the Byzantines, to Bidandūn, during the miḥnah, and I was handed over to Ashnās. When he died, he released me. Al-Ḥasan died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. ʿAlī b. al-Jahm b. Badr al-Sāmī ʿAlī b. al-Jahm b. Badr al-Sāmī: From the descendants of Sāmah b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib. He was a poet and had a special relationship with al-Mutawakkil. He was virtuous, devout, with good, admired poetry, except that he used to speak before al-Mutawakkil [against his companions], so al-Mutawakkil imprisoned him, then exiled him to Khurasan. Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Shādhān said: I heard Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī say: ʿAlī b. al-Jahm told me: Al-Mutawakkil sent me to Baghdad on an errand for him. When Friday came I prayed in the courtyard, and there was a beggar who stood asking. He narrated sound ḥadīths, recited well-composed poetry, and spoke good words. He captured the hearts of the people. Then he said to them: "O people, I have not been afflicted with lameness. I was tried in many fields of knowledge. I went out to al-Jaʿfarī to al-Mutawakkil, and I was carried with dust on my head. One day al-Mutawakkil went out on his donkey, circling the palace, so I threw dust on my head and recited to him the so-and-so qaṣīdah." He recited it and excelled in reciting it. He ordered for me ten thousand dirhams. ʿAlī b. al-Jahm said to him: "Right now the people of al-Khuld will open up for you, and the treasuries will not suffice you." So I was not given anything, and no one remained but cursed me and blamed me. I said to the servant: "Bring me the beggar." He brought him to me, and I said to him: "Do you know ʿAlī b. al-Jahm?" He said: "No." I said to the servant: "Who am I?" He said: "ʿAlī b. al-Jahm." I said to some elders near me: "Who am I?" They said: "ʿAlī b. al-Jahm." He said: "What do you find objectionable in this? Give me ten dirhams and I will take you out and bring in someone else." So I gave him ten dirhams, and I made him promise not to mention me. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā said: ʿAlī b. al-Jahm said: The calamities of time are many, and the most severe of them is a gathering over which the day of separation has taken control. O heart, why did you expose yourself to passion? Did you not see the deaths of the lovers? ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Naṣr said: Aḥmad b. Ḥamdūn said: In Shaʿbān of the year two hundred and forty-nine, a letter from the postmaster of Aleppo reached al-Mustaʿīn stating that ʿAlī b. al-Jahm had left Aleppo heading for a military expedition. A band of horsemen from Kalb attacked him and a group with him. He fought them fiercely, and people caught up with him while he was wounded at his last breath. Among what he said: Did a flood flow at dawn, or was night added to the night? O my brothers at Dujayl, and where is Dujayl from me? [His residence in Baghdad was on Dujayl Street]. It was reported that he died, and a slip of paper was found with him when his clothes were removed after his death, on which was written: O mercy for the stranger in the land, the one far from home, what has he done to himself? He parted from his loved ones, and they did not benefit from life after him, nor did he benefit. He died at that place one day's journey from Aleppo. Among his admired poetry: The eyes of the oryx between al-Ruṣāfah and the bridge brought passion from where I know and do not know. They restored to me the old longing, and I was not one who had forgotten, but they added embers upon embers. [They greeted and surrendered the hearts, as if piercing with the tips of straightened spear shafts. And they said to her: We are the crescent moons; we only give light to one who travels by night, and we do not entice. There is no giving except what a beholder provisions himself with, and no union except with the phantom that travels. My two friends, how sweet passion is and how bitter, and it has made me know the sweet and the bitter in it.] Passion is enough as an occupation, and grey hair as a restrainer, if only passion could be restrained by forbidding. By the sanctity between us, have you two seen anything more delicate than complaint and harder than abandonment? And more exposing of a lover's secret than his eye, especially when a tear appears and flows. Indeed I am among those whose mention travels with the frontier, but my poems travel with my mention. Not everyone who leads steeds can train them, and not everyone who races is called a racer. But the kindness of the Caliph Jaʿfar called me to what I said in poetry. The generosity of his right hand scattered the gathered wealth, yet it left for him the most beautiful remembrance. When opinion inclines, his thought reaches wonders that never occurred to any mind or thought. He does not gather wealth except to give it away, just as sacrificial animals are driven only to the slaughter. Whoever says that the rain and the sea resemble each other has praised the sea and the rain. Do you seek, other than the Book of Allah, a witness for you, O Banū al-ʿAbbās, to glory and pride? It suffices you that Allah delegated His command to you, and revealed that you should obey those in authority. Is faith accepted except through love for you? Does Allah accept prayer without purification? Whoever is of unknown place, your abodes are between al-Ḥajūn and al-Ḥijr. Khallād b. Aslam, Abū Bakr Khallād b. Aslam, Abū Bakr. He heard Hushaym, Ibn ʿUyaynah, and al-Naḍr b. Shumayl. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, al-Baghawī, Ibn Ṣāʿid, and al-Maḥāmilī narrated from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: "A jurist, trustworthy." Abū ʿĪsā Muḥammad b. Mūsā sent to me on the days of a festival that he needed spending money, and I had only three thousand dirhams. I sent them to him. When they came into his possession, Khallād b. Aslam sent to him that he needed spending money, so he sent all of it to him. Then I needed spending money, so I sent to Khallād that I needed spending money, and he sent all of it to me. When I saw it wrapped in its cloth, and it was the very same dirhams, I found that strange, so I sent to Khallād: "Tell me the story of these dirhams." He informed me that al-Ḥakam b. Among his excellent poetry: A calamity that no calamity equals: the enmity of one without lineage or religion. He permits you to attack an honor he did not protect, and he grazes on a protected honor of yours. He said that about Marwān b. Abī Ḥafṣah when he satirized him. In his satire of him he said: By your life, al-Jahm b. Badr is not a poet, and this ʿAlī after him claims poetry. But my father had been a neighbor of his mother, so when he claimed poems, he made me imagine something. ʿAlī b. al-Jahm had come to Syria and then returned heading to Iraq. When he passed Aleppo, some people from Banū Kalb attacked him, and he fought them and was severely wounded, and that was his death. A slip of paper was found among his clothes on which was written: O mercy for the stranger in the land, the one far from home, what has he done to himself?
