قَتْلِ أُتَامِشَ فِي سَنَةُ تِسْعٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ قُتِلَ أُتَامِشُ وَكَاتِبُهُ شُجَاعٌ، وَكَانَ سَبَبُ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْمُسْتَعِينَ أَطْلَقَ يَدَ وَالِدَتِهِ، وَيَدَ أُتَامِشَ، وَشَاهَكَ الْخَادِمِ فِي بُيُوتِ الْأَمْوَالِ، وَأَبَاحَهُمْ ( فِعْلَ ) مَا أَرَادُوا، فَكَانَتِ الْأَمْوَالُ الَّتِي تَرِدُ مِنَ الْآفَاقِ يَصِيرُ مُعْظَمُهَا إِلَى هَؤُلَاءِ الثَّلَاثَةِ، فَأَخَذَ أُتَامِشُ أَكْثَرَ مَا فِي بُيُوتِ الْأَمْوَالِ، وَكَانَ فِي حِجْرِهِ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْمُسْتَعِينِ، وَكَانَ مَا فَضَلَ مِنْ هَؤُلَاءِ ( الثَّلَاثَةِ ) أَخَذَهُ أُتَامِشُ لِلْعَبَّاسِ فَصَرَفَهُ فِي نَفَقَاتِهِ، وَكَانَتِ الْمَوَالِي تَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْأَمْوَالِ تُؤْخَذُ وَهُمْ فِي ضِيقَةٍ، وَوَصِيفٌ وَبُغَا بِمَعْزِلٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَأَغْرَيَا الْمُوَالِيَ بأُتَامِشَ، وَأَحْكَمَا أَمْرَهُ، فَاجْتَمَعَتِ الْأَتْرَاكُ وَالْفَرَاغِنَةُ عَلَيْهِ، وَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْهُمْ أَهْلُ الدُّورِ وَالْكَرْخِ، فَعَسْكَرُوا فِي رَبِيعٍ الْآخِرِ، وَزَحَفُوا إِلَيْهِ وَهُوَ فِي الْجَوْسَقِ مَعَ الْمُسْتَعِينِ، وَبَلَغَهُ الْخَبَرُ، فَأَرَادَ الْهَرَبَ، فَلَمْ يُمْكِنْهُ، وَاسْتَجَارَ بِالْمُسْتَعِينِ، فَلَمْ يُجِرْهُ، فَأَقَامُوا عَلَى ذَلِكَ يَوْمَيْنِ، ثُمَّ دَخَلُوا الْجَوْسَقَ، وَأَخَذُوا أُتَامِشَ، فَقَتَلُوهُ، وَقَتَلُوا كَاتِبَهُ شُجَاعًا، وَنُهِبَتْ دُورُ أُتَامِشَ، فَأَخَذُوا مِنْهُ أَمْوَالًا جَمَّةً وَغَيْرَ ذَلِكَ. فَلَمَّا قُتِلَ استَوْزَرَ الْمُسْتَعِينُ أَبَا صَالِحٍ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَزْدَادَ، وَعَزَلَ الْفَضْلَ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ عَنْ دِيُونِ الْخَرَاجِ، وَوَلَّاهُ عِيسَى بْنُ فَرَّخَانشَاه، وَوَلِيَ وَصِيفٌ الْأَهْوَازَ، وَبُغَا الصَّغِيرُ فِلَسْطِينَ. ثُمَّ غَضِبَ بُغَا الصَّغِيرُ عَلَى أَبِي صَالِحٍ، فَهَرَبَ إِلَى بَغْدَادَ، فَاسْتَوْزَرَ الْمُسْتَعِينُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ الْفَضْلِ الْجَرْجَرَائِيَّ، وَجَعَلَ عَلَى دِيوَانِ الرَّسَائِلِ سَعِيدَ بْنَ حُمَيْدٍ، فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُونِيُّ: لَبِسَ السَّيْفَ سَعِيدٌ بَعْدَمَا كَانَ ذَا طِمْرَيْنِ لَا تَوْبَةَ لَهْ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ لِآيَاتٍ، وَذَا آيَةٌ لِلَّهِ فِينَا مُنْزَلَهْ
Translation
✧ The Killing of Utāmish In the year two hundred and forty-nine, Utāmish and his secretary Shujāʿ were killed. The reason for that was that al-Mustaʿīn gave free rein to his mother, to Utāmish, and to Shāhak the servant over the treasuries, and allowed them to do whatever they wished. Most of the wealth that came in from the regions went to these three. Utāmish took most of what was in the treasuries. In his care was al-ʿAbbās b. al-Mustaʿīn, and whatever was left over from these three, Utāmish took for al-ʿAbbās and spent it on his expenses. The mawālī watched the wealth being taken while they were in straitened circumstances, while Waṣīf and Bughā were kept away from it. So they incited the mawālī against Utāmish and made his matter certain. The Turks and the Farāghinah gathered against him, and among them the people of al-Dūr and al-Karkh came out against him. They encamped in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir and advanced against him while he was in al-Jawsaq with al-Mustaʿīn. The news reached him, and he wanted to flee but could not. He sought refuge with al-Mustaʿīn, but he did not grant him refuge. They remained thus for two days. Then they entered al-Jawsaq, seized Utāmish, and killed him. They also killed his secretary Shujāʿ. The houses of Utāmish were plundered, and they took from him abundant wealth and other things. When he was killed, al-Mustaʿīn appointed as wazīr Abū Ṣāliḥ ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Yazdād, and dismissed al-Faḍl b. Marwān from the land-tax offices, appointing ʿĪsā b. Farrakhānshāh over them. Waṣīf was appointed over al-Ahwāz, and Bughā al-Ṣaghīr over Filasṭīn. Then Bughā al-Ṣaghīr became angry with Abū Ṣāliḥ, so he fled to Baghdād. Al-Mustaʿīn then appointed as wazīr Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl al-Jarjarāʾī, and placed Saʿīd b. Ḥumayd over the dīwān al-rasāʾil. Al-Ḥamdūnī said: Saʿīd wore the sword after he had been in two worn garments; there is no repentance for him. God has signs, and this is a sign of God sent down among us.
