اخْتَلَفُوا فِي زَمَانِ كَوْنِهِ. فَرَوِيَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ؓ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كَانَ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ الْأُوَلِ مِنْ وَلَدِ يَافِثَ بْنِ نُوحٍ. وَقِيلَ: إِنَّهُ مِنْ وَلَدِ عَيْلَمَ بْنِ سَامٍ. وَأَنَّهُ وُلِدَ بِأَرْضِ الرُّومِ حِينَ نَزَلَهَا وَلَدُ سَامٍ. وَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ الْبَصْرِيُّ: كَانَ بَعْدَ ثَمُودَ. وَذَكَرَ أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْمُنَادِي أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي زَمَانِ الْخَلِيلِ، وَمَاتَ فِي ذَلِكَ الزَّمَانِ. وَهَذَا الْأَشْبَهُ. وعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: أَنَّ ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ لَقِيَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْخَلِيلَ بِمَكَّةَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ وَصَافَحَهُ وَاعْتَنَقَهُ. وَجَاءَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ: أَنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْخَلِيلَ كَانَ جَالِسًا فِي مَكَانٍ فَسَمِعَ صَوْتًا، فَقَالَ: مَا هَذَا الصَّوْتُ؟ قِيلَ لَهُ: هَذَا ذُو الْقَرْنَيْنِ فِي جُنُودِهِ. فَقَالَ لِرَجُلٍ عِنْدَهُ: ائْتِ ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ وَأَقْرِئْهُ مِنِّي السَّلَامَ، فَأَتَاهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ، قَالَ: وَمَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ؟ قَالَ: خَلِيلُ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ: وَإِنَّهُ لَهَاهُنَا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَنَزَلَ [عَنْ فَرَسِهِ وَمَشَى]، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ مَسَافَةً، فَقَالَ: مَا كُنْتُ أَرْكَبُ فِي بَلَدٍ فِيهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ، فَمَشَى إِلَيْهِ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، وَأَوْصَاهُ، وَأَهْدَى إِلَيْهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بَقَرًا وَغَنَمًا.
Translation
✧ They differed concerning the time of his existence. It was related from ʿAlī ؓ that he said: He was from the earliest generations, from the descendants of Yāfith b. Nūḥ. It was also said: He was from the descendants of ʿAylam b. Sām, and that he was born in the land of the Romans when the descendants of Sām settled there. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said: He was after Thamūd. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī mentioned that he was in the time of the Friend (al-Khalīl), and that he died in that time. This is the most likely. From Ibn ʿAbbās: Dhū al-Qarnayn met Ibrāhīm the Friend in Makkah, greeted him, shook his hand, and embraced him. It came in another ḥadīth: Ibrāhīm the Friend was sitting in a place and heard a sound, so he said: What is this sound? It was said to him: This is Dhū al-Qarnayn with his armies. So he said to a man with him: Go to Dhū al-Qarnayn and convey my greeting to him. He went to him and said: Ibrāhīm conveys greeting to you. He said: And who is Ibrāhīm? He said: The Friend of the Merciful. He said: Is he here? He said: Yes. So he dismounted [from his horse and walked]. It was said to him: There is a distance between you and him. He said: I would not ride in a land in which Ibrāhīm is. So he walked to him, greeted him, and he instructed him, and Ibrāhīm gifted him cattle and sheep.
